A reprinted school text from the 1930's. Simple & basic
By A Customer
Projects increase in difficulty. Was written with the assumption that the reader has another reference (instructor) and basic shop knowledge. The casting sections are slightly criptic. Spin casting tech was not invented, hence no mention. Solid info. A good start, for basic sheet metal construction.

Interesting, but aging
By wiredweird
This Dover edition reprints a 1938 manual, originally by a different name. So, it stands in somewhat unfair comparison to modern books. Still, parts of it remain useful, and even informative. For example, the initial chapter on pewter's history: it offers a whirlwind tour of the alloy through the ages, from Roman times to the book's then-current day. At least this remains current, since the primary alloy, Brittania metal, and solder alloys haven't changed. History of pewter's use, and why so few older pieces survive, also throw light on how we got to the current day.
Many of the projects could be interesting to a modern beginner, too. They start with simple fabrication from store-bought sheets of pewter, then work up through chasing and repousse, various kinds of casting, up to "spinning", a lathe technique for objects with circular cross section. Chapters show, among other things, how to make molds in pieces, for complex shapes. Although the authors mention the home craftsman as one intended audience, the tools for spinning and the techniques of mold-making for it seem out of reach of most modern hobbyists. Likewise, I appreciate the extensive descriptions of various wood forms and molds one could make to help in shaping the metal, but that level of woodworking seems to live on only in dedicated amateurs, few of whom would dedicate to a second craft as well.
Parts of this discussion have aged badly, though. The instructional drawings are of older style, generally clear, but lacking information might hinder a beginner trying to use this book for instruction. For example, a few projects indicate the thickness ("guage") of sheet metal required - but only a few, leaving one to guess about the rest. Some of the projects, too, like the stand for inkwell and dipped fountain pens, seem obsolete. The authors use lead-based solders throughout - a no-no in our world, with zero tolerance for lead in anything that touches food. And tools have aged progressed, too. Torches with mouth-driven blowpipes are rarities today, as is access to nitric acid as an etchant.
So, I recommend this to readers interested in history, especially the history of the craft. Modern readers, however, will get much more from books like Pewter Studio. The metal has made something of a comeback, partly because of the ease of using it in complex constructions, but also because soaring prices of precious metals have made alternatives more attractive. It certainly attracts me, and I intend to explore lots more of its possibilities.

Great for intro to Pewter
By Mark Cutright
Just like the title says. Whether your a budding metalsmith like myself or just interested in making a project from pewter, this book is a resource that belongs in your library. It was recommended to me by my instructor, a master metalsmith in her own right, and I'm glad I picked it up.
