Brilliant biography of one of the enigmas of recent Australian politics

Paul Keating is one of the great enigmas of modern Australian politics. He is a person who excited great emotions both positive and negative. He plainly contributed to a vast raft of overdue reforms in Australia such as floating the Australian dollar and progressive tariff reduction. There are numerous and intense disputes as to the extent of his contribution to these and many other vital reforms not least because some credit is claimed by prime minister Bob Hawke.
David Day has produced a magisterial and articulate biography of a very difficult subject. He does not directly resolve matters such as who gets credit for what in terms of some of the major reforms of the Hawke/Keating era. However, readers will walk away from this with a wider and clearer understanding of the enigma the subject of the biography. It is no criticism of the author that I still find it difficult to accept that all of the features of Paul Keating’s personality and achievements could be packaged in the same human being. I guess that is what makes him so utterly fascinating. Not all of those features are very attractive but Keating had the ability to inspire and charm and to see what needed to be done to improve the Australian economic system. To see that system in operation today is to make it almost impossible to imagine what the system must have been like when Bob Hawke and Paul Keating became, respectively, Prime Minister and Treasurer. (That is not to say that others have not had a hand in developing the economic system we have today. However, none of their successors have undertaken changes which were as fundamental as Hawke and Keating.)
Anyone who has read David Day’s other biographies of great Australian leaders knows that he has set the bar as to standards very high. This biography does not disappoint. I suspect it will be the leading work on the topic for many, many years.

This book is small, easy to read but has a large impact on the reader. It will make an excellent gift especially to someone who is just not sure God really loves them. About the Author
Jeanne Ballantine is university professor of sociology at Wright State University. She received her masters degree from Columbia University and her PhD from Indiana University. Jeanne has taught in a number of venues including Japan, Brazil, Spain, Italy Rwanda (as a Fulbright scholar), Semester at Sea and Wittenberg University in Ohio. Her primary areas of scholarship are sociology of education, applied sociology, global studies, and global women’s issues. Jeanne has held a number of positions in the professional organizations including International Sociological Association, American Sociological Association, North Central Sociological Association, and Society for Applied Sociology. She has authored 5 books and many articles, and done workshops, especially on faculty development and teaching and learning, in the U.S. and other countries. She is a member of the ASA Departmental Resources Group and does evaluation visits at colleges and universities. Among her many awards is the ASA Distinguished Contributions to Teaching Award.

The only kiddie version of The Symposium in print

This book was written in 1894, but for the most part is pretty fresh. There are 27 chapters and each story is based on an ancient text. It has been fun as an adult to puzzle out the origins of each tale. My six year old is enjoying listening to this book too.

Not as good as I hoped

My little boy has been exposed to a fair bit of philosophy, since my own training was in that subject. I was looking for another philosophy book after we read The Little Book of Big Questions. I got this book thinking it might have a significant amount of Plato's philosophy in it. It has only a tiny bit of recognizable moral philosophy. Most of the selections are myths, and indeed 90-95% of this book is myth. Of course, like all myth, the stories had plenty of moralistic elements, but that's different from moral philosophy.

Qua myth, this is a rather disappointing collection to me. My son has read a lot of myth, too, and he enjoyed this. First, I can't say that I like this writer much. She goes into great detail on relatively trivial points and leaves development of the main action/theme threadbare. On a couple of occasions Burt repeats the same myth, in a different way, from one chapter to the next, as if she had forgotten to take out one of the versions. Maybe there is a pedagogical reason for this, but I'm not so sure. As for those myths that I recognized (about half of them), quite a few seemed to have significant details changed.

Primitive explanations of phenomena are presented in the author's voice, or when it isn't clear whether she's speaking for herself or on behalf of the myth source. Of course, there's nothing wrong with giving primitive explanations of phenomena in a book of myth--that's what a lot of myth is about, after all--but there is something wrong, and annoying, in writing daft (Burt's introduction uses the word "poetic") stuff that isn't clearly presented as myth.

Similarly backwards is the gratuitous nineteenth-century moral sentiment that shouldn't be surprising in a book first published 1894. Don't get me wrong; I don't mind moralistic writing in the least. What I mind is the ham-handed style.

Now, the good: my five-year-old liked this book a lot, and said he wanted he wanted to get all of Mary Burt's writings. On the other hand, when I asked him what he liked about the book, he said, "the font." Seriously, I think the style appealed to him--but then, considering that this is an old-fashioned (nineteenth century) style, that just shows you that he's a weird little kid. And, since this was not a "greatest hits of Greek & Roman myth" sort of book, we did get exposed to a greater variety of myth than we had had from our various other sources so far.

In short, this gets three stars from us (I might have given it two if not for my son's opinion) simply because it's a fairly mediocre book, both as philosophy and as myth. It's not surprising it was out of print until revived by "Yesterday's Classics."

Adam Gazzaley is Professor in the Departments of Neurology, Physiology, and Psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco, where he is also Director of the Neuroscience Imaging Center. The cutting-edge science of why so many folks these days are in a distracted haze, its dangers, and what to do about it

Have you noticed how many people are looking at their smartphones while walking, crossing the street or even driving? Does it drive you up the wall that your friends keep checking their phones while you're trying to talk to them or share a meal? Our addiction to gadgets and gizmos has brought us to the brink of an attention crisis, which is not just harmful but dangerous. 80% of all car accidents and 16% of highway deaths result from distracted driving, and every year texting while driving kills thousands of folks before their time. In addition, hundreds of billions of dollars in productivity are lost annually to distraction, not to mention the loss in overall quality of life. Why do we all do this even though we know it's terrible for us? And is there a cure?

Goal interruption is the ultimate problem, and the culprits are distractions and interruptions (there's a difference!). According to Drs Gazzaley and Rosen, we are susceptible to them because we still have brains designed for foraging, always scoping the environment for novel information to enhance survival. Unfortunately, modern gizmos plug directly into this foraging circuit, making us go "Squirrel!" even when it's just a picture of one on a screen, and we don't really eat squirrels anymore anyway.

Gazzaley and Rosen -- a neuroscientist and psychologist, respectively -- make a strong case that distraction is indeed diminishing the quality of our lives in significant ways. They lay out the science of attention and information processing in a way that is thorough yet accessible to a general audience. What I particularly like about this book is that they themselves have done some of the pioneering research on distraction and attention, so you're getting it straight from the source. I gained a lot of insight into how goal interruption happens. For example:
-- Suppressing irrelevant information is not a passive process. It requires effort, and as you get older, you get worse at it, and are more distractable.
-- Your brain can only handle one cognitive task at a time, so multitasking is impossible. What you're really doing when you think you're multitasking is 'task switching', and the brain can only do that via network switching: activating a whole different set of circuits. This slows you down, big time.

So we've identified the problem -- now what? The last two chapters of the book propose some solutions: educational initiatives, meditation, exercise, brain games, and video games, some of which (like Beepseeker and NeuroRacer) are being developed in the Gazzaley Lab right now. This is cutting-edge stuff, folks, and potentially revolutionary.

There's so much more in the book that simply won't fit in a short review. For me, the information was especially important because I've been feeling a lot of my energy and productivity frittering away from distractions like email and social media. How much more could I get done if I managed my mind better? "The Distracted Mind" non-judgmentally frames the problem as the urgent crisis that it is, while proffering some straightforward solutions. Maybe you, too, would like to take back some of your time and attention, or have a loved one that really needs help in this department. If so, this book is the persuasive wallop you need to make the change towards a more goal-oriented, productive, healthy life.

This book is an excellent resource for anyone curious about the impact on technology on our brains and how it affects our daily lives. Gazzaley and Rosen provide the background research––both the neuroscience and psychology––behind what is driving our obsession with technology, the positive and (mostly) negative impacts it has on our ability to focus and perform our best work, and how to take back control of our attention for optimal achievement. Most of us don't realize when we are blindly reacting to our environment rather than making conscious choices about where to focus our attention. The Distracted Mind will help you recognize these moments and choose for yourself how to best spend your time.

Heavy on research, scant on strategies/applications

The book goes very in depth on the research into how the mind works in terms of attention, distraction, motivation, choices, etc; and how it is affected when technology is thrown into the mix. However, I was really expecting and hoping for more strategies for maintaining one's ability to focus in this highly connected, multitasking society. This third part of the book was meager and contained nothing that I was not already aware of. I had expected that these two authors would use their expertise to postulate novel applications based on their excellent summation of the important research on this subject, or offer opinions or theories to help people maintain their focus. They did not do that at all. Pretty disappointing on that end.
