This handbook was written specifically for beginning students. It presents twenty-seven graded readings, each accompanied by a vocabulary and an explanation of grammatical details; the final chapter provides a sample of the Codex Argenteus. Among the readings, the first seven are in effect preliminary exercises. The remaining twenty readings represent the Gothic Bible and the Skeireins. The external history of the language is also outlined, as well as the elements of phonetics, and the essentials of phonologic and analogic change.

Review

"An introductory textbook of Gothic by a scholar of Professor Bennett's eminence is of course to be welcomed without qualification, the more so because it in no way duplicates its competitors in the field. The clarity of presentation is exemplary." --Modern Language Review

Bennett, on the Gothic Language
By Mr. Gary Dykes
This 190 page hardcover edition is a fine supplement to the classical works by Wright and Streitberg. Professor Bennett (born in 1907, and long associated with Notre Dame)is eminently qualified for such a work.
The work nicely intergrates Gothic within its Indo-European framework, displaying and commenting upon the relationships.
As an expert within the disapline of general Indo-European linguistics, the reader will note a healty dosage of modern linguistic terms and concepts.
The book is laid out into 28 chapters, each covering some aspect of the language (grammar, phonetics, historical aspects etc.)and each has some concluding exercises. [No answers are provided in a supplementary work (apparently), the user seeks out the answer in the work]. It is thus a book useful for classroom purposes. It has a fine 42 page Gothic-English dictionary, and a good bibliography. It also has a proper (though brief) index.
The various languages used in the text are clearly transliterated, and the type and layout is clutter-free. One objection I have is that he does not show his precise transliteration scheme for the IE (or PIE) words or for the Greek words, it appears that he is assuming that the instructor and student are familiar with his (or a standard?) scheme. As an expert with the Germanic languages he displays his adeptness here, perhaps too much so, as he seems to focus a bit heavily upon the Germanic/Latin angle as opposed to the German/IE/Greek aspects. But this may be just my bias.
The hardcover edition has 3 facsimiles of Gothic MSS, one of which is very unreadable (none on glossy paper). Bennett gives some room for discussion about the surviving texts. The hardbound edition is well made, it is smyth-sewn, no statements are made regarding the quality of the paper, but it feels acid-free.
All-in-all, a fine work, highly recommended for all students of this fine ancient language, and important for Biblical scholars as well who desire (or need) to access an early text of the NT. This grammar can get you up and running. A good book well worth $32.00.

Gets you reading Gothic right away
By Eric J. Kingsepp
An excellent and quite painless way to learn Gothic. Its biggest virtue lies in its organization. It's not a textbook, but it's definitely not a dry, dusty grammar like Joseph Wright's books (which, btw, are very useful books; they're just not the cover-to-cover type). The best thing about the book's layout is: it gets you reading Gothic right away! From the beginning, each chapter has:

1. a reading in Gothic (from Scripture generally, since practically all extant texts are of Wulfila's translation of the Bible);

2. all the vocab you need to understand it;

3. a manageable-sized description of some piece of grammar (say, a couple of classes of nouns here, a few more the next chapter) with exercises to help you drill yourself on them; and

4. some other information.

These last sections range from an easy-to-read discussion about Indo-European to the place of Gothic within the Germanic language family, to a brief history of the Gothic tribes, to (later) discussions about phonetics and morphology that are more technical, not b/c of their writing style but simply b/c they're packed with information. These stem from the book's expressed purpose of presenting Gothic not only as easily as possible for the learner, but in the context of comparative Germanics and comparative linguistics generally.

If you're not into comparative linguistics, you can ignore these parts and still learn the language with relative speed. It's a very versatile book. A decent amount of effort on each chapter of this book will amaze you with how soon you can read Gothic texts. Highly recommended.

As expected, not all of the information is up to date with the online websites for some schools.

Some schools described in the back are not detailed in the book at all.

The appendix is a little difficult to navigate, it would be nice if page numbers were included or there was an entire index dedicated to the schools mentioned in the book.

Otherwise, if you're just using this book to get an idea of where you should apply (as you definitely should not rely solely on this book for all of your graduate school information), it does a decent job.

ESSENTIAL Book for SERIOUS Tennis Players.
By Luis Angel Betancur F
I bought the Kindle Edition.

As an anaesthesiologist who has read a lot about medicine I can assure you that this book has been written in a magnificent style and ilustrated in an outstanding manner.

When I bought it I was struggling with some injuries:

* Left wrist pain (although I am a right handed player): Diagnosed as tendonitis.
* Both right and left shoulder pain, mainly left shoulder (probably associated to an old trauma).
* Left (posterior) knee and tibial pain.

So, I bought this book and now I am free of these problems.

What I found to be great was all the theory behind tennis injuries. I think the most valuable concept is the need to train your non dominant side and also work your upper and lower body.

I found enriching the "playing styles and court surfaces" explanations, this will guide your fitness plan when you decide to be a serious competitor.
It has thorough explanations about forehand, backhand (one/two handed), serves, overheads and volleys with muscular and training considerations that are great.

Check content ("look inside") and you will see it is organized in a very logical style.

You will find some very basic exercises that probably won't need much gym equipment (hamstring stretch, wrist-arm-elbow endurance) and other that will make you go to a good gym.

I bought a light (5 pounds) dumbbell and aReebok Balance Board, and I try to go to the gym once/twice a week.

For its price and content I must rate it 5 stars.

I have other tennis books:
- Stretching Anatomy
- The Inner Game of Tennis: The Classic Guide to the Mental Side of Peak Performance.
- Seven Habits of Successful Doubles.
- The Art of Doubles: Winning Tennis Strategies and Drills.
- Tennis Serve Technique and Tips: The How-To Guide.
- Building a Champion: The Fundamentals of Playing & Coaching Tennis.

P.S: I am an intermediate-advanced tennis player (NTRP: 4,5 level*); I like technical aspects about racquets, strings, tennis shoes and tennis accessories. Nowadays I am playing 80% of my time on clay surface and 20% on hard courts. I play 10-12 hours per week.

Racquets currently I am using: Volkl power bridge 8, Dunlop biomimetic 400 tour, Volkl power bridge 9.
Stringing: Hybrid with technifibre NRG2 (17) in mains and babolat duralast (17) in crosses.

I am mainly a baseline player, using an eastern forehand grip and one-handed backhand.

I have other tennis items reviews, maybe can be useful 4 u.

Votes are welcome ..... if you wish ...

*If you want to know your tennis level visit: National Tennis Rating Program at the USTA web site.

A game-changer among tennis books
By M. Weng
If you're serious about tennis coaching, then you'll probably realize that there are only so many tennis books before you plateau in knowledge.

While there are many, many great tennis books, they all cover a revolving set of topics - technique, strategy, and so-called "tips and tricks" books that just buckshot a bunch of tennis wisdom in a largely disorganized manner. All three have changed significantly over the past twenty years, rendering many of these books outdated, if not outright useless for modern tennis. Using technique from as recent as the early 2000's would be difficult to compete with today's heavy, baseline-slugger style of game, and strategy has grown to depend a lot more on physicality than pure shot-making and placement.

Tennis Anatomy addresses the issue of outdated knowledge by going to the root of the problem - the human body. The human body does not evolve (at least not in a lifetime), and with better understanding of it, you acquire what I consider the foundation of great tennis knowledge. Great tennis knowledge, in my opinion, is not about memorizing thousands of drills and copying swing techniques of top pros. It's about understanding the subtle differences between sound biomechanics and individual style. This book will plant those seeds if you study it well. It will allow you to develop drills that specifically address certain parts of the body when development starts to lag. In turn, this translates into smarter and more targeted training plans, resulting in more efficient practices. The exercises in this book, although relevant, are not the most cutting edge. However, they are simplistic enough to help you understand why and how they target the specific areas, and why they are needed. If you approach the book this way, it will help you become extremely prolific in developing unique tennis exercises based on sound, scientific research. As such, it is an invaluable resource for those who aspire to become great tennis coaches / athletes.

At the risk of sounding elitist, this book isn't meant for someone looking to just play a Friday night mixer once a month, or even once a week. It will help, but you will feel like you are in way over your head with knowledge that doesn't seem to matter. This book also isn't for someone who doesn't make the effort to train and/or modify the exercises when equipment isn't available. No weights? Use gallon jugs with water, or elastic bands. No barbells? Use backpacks with books. No boxes? Use park benches. Just because you don't have the equipment should not stop you from taking advantage of the treasury of information in this book. This book is meant for high-performance athletes, and should be treated with such work ethic.

About the Author

Carol R. Ember started at Antioch College as a chemistry major. She began taking social science courses because some were required, but she soon found herself intrigued. There were lots of questions without answers, and she became excited about the possibility of a research career in social science. She spent a year in graduate school at Cornell studying sociology before continuing on to Harvard, where she studied anthropology primarily with John and Beatrice Whiting.

For her Ph.D. dissertation she worked among the Luo of Kenya. While there she noticed that many boys were assigned “girls’ work,” such as babysitting and household chores, because their mothers (who did most of the agriculture) did not have enough girls to help out. She decided to study the possible effects of task assignment on the social behavior of boys. Using systematic behavior observations, she compared girls, boys who did a great deal of girls’ work, and boys who did little such work. She found that boys assigned girls’ work were intermediate in many social behaviors, compared with the other boys and girls. Later, she did cross-cultural research on variation in marriage, family, descent groups, and war and peace, mainly in collaboration with Melvin Ember, whom she married in 1970. All of these cross-cultural studies tested theories on data for worldwide samples of societies.

From 1970 to 1996, she taught at Hunter College of the City University of New York. She has served as president of the Society of Cross-Cultural Research and was one of the directors of the Summer Institutes in Comparative Anthropological Research, which were funded by the National Science Foundation. From 1996 until 2009 she served as executive director of the Human Relations Area Files, Inc. (HRAF), a nonprofit research agency at Yale University. She was appointed President of HRAF in 2010. She is also currently Past-President of the Society for Anthropological Sciences.

After graduating from Columbia College, Melvin Ember went to Yale University for his Ph.D. His mentor at Yale was George Peter Murdock, an anthropologist who was instrumental in promoting cross-cultural research and building a full-text database on the cultures of the world to facilitate cross-cultural hypothesis testing. This database came to be known as the Human Relations Area Files (HRAF) because it was originally sponsored by the Institute of Human Relations at Yale. Growing in annual installments and now distributed in electronic format, the HRAF database currently covers more than 410 cultures, past and present, all over the world.

Melvin Ember did fieldwork for his dissertation in American Samoa, where he conducted a comparison of three villages to study the effects of commercialization on political life. In addition, he did research on descent groups and how they changed with the increase of buying and selling. His cross-cultural studies focused originally on variation in marital residence and descent groups. He has also done cross-cultural research on the relationship between economic and political development, the origin and extension of the incest taboo, the causes of polygyny, and how archaeological correlates of social customs can help us draw inferences about the past.

After four years of research at the National Institute of Mental Health, he taught at Antioch College and then Hunter College of the City University of New York. He has served as president of the Society for Cross-Cultural Research. From 1987 until his death in 2009, he was president of HRAF.

Peter N. Peregrine came to anthropology after completing an undergraduate degree in English. He found anthropology’s social scientific approach to understanding humans more appealing than the humanistic approach he had learned as an English major. He undertook an ethnohistorical study of the relationship between Jesuit missionaries and Native American peoples for his master’s degree and realized that he needed to study archaeology to understand the cultural interactions experienced by Native Americans prior to contact with the Jesuits.

While working on his PhD at Purdue University, Peter Peregrine did research on the prehistoric Mississippian cultures of the eastern United States. He found that interactions between groups were common and had been shaping Native American cultures for centuries. Native Americans approached contact with the Jesuits simply as another in a long string of intercultural exchanges. He also found that relatively little research had been done on Native American interactions and decided that comparative research was a good place to begin examining the topic. In 1990, he participated in the Summer Institute in Comparative Anthropological Research, where he met Carol R. Ember and Melvin Ember/

Peter Peregrine is professor of anthropology at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin and external professor at the Santa Fe Institute in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He also serves as research associate for the Human Relations Area Files. He continues to do archaeological research, and to teach anthropology and archaeology to undergraduate students.

A LONG ESTABLISHED AND STALWART REFERENCE FOR PATENT ATTORNEYS – THE “BLACK BOOK” NOW IN A NEW EIGHTH EDITION
By Phillip Taylor MBE
A LONG ESTABLISHED AND STALWART REFERENCE FOR PATENT ATTORNEYS – THE “BLACK BOOK” NOW IN A NEW EIGHTH EDITION

An appreciation by Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richmond Green Chambers

CIPA is “The Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys” and this is the book that has been described in Floyd LJ’s foreword as the ‘stalwart of the profession.’ It has been so since the first edition appeared in 1980 and it continues to be so with this new eighth edition recently published by Sweet & Maxwell/Thomson Reuters.

Actually the provenance of this long established work of reference goes back even further. According to its co-editor Paul Cole, its precursors can be traced back to 1950 with the publication of the Patents Act 1949 by the then Chartered Institute of Patent Agents. The second edition of 1968 was published with the stated aim of providing “a manual for reference, if not daily, at least whenever any doubt arises on the provisions of the Act or Rules and above all, on the practice under them.” ‘The aim and format’ of what has become known as ‘The Back Book’, adds Paul Cole, ‘have continued unchanged to the present day.’

As ever, the aim of this publication has been to record and comment upon the multiplicity of changes that have taken place pertaining to patent legislation over relatively recent decades, including European and international developments. But wait, you might argue, patents and the legislation pertaining to patents go back a lot longer than, say, the twentieth century. And so they do, with section 6 of the Statute of Monopolies 1623 which linked patent eligibility ‘to the working or making of any manner of new manufacture within the realm.’ So, it has some history!

Returning to the present, it seems appropriate to quote the editor that ‘the law of patents in the UK is… no longer contained in any single act and keeping up to date with all the various changes remains a challenge.’

Fortunately we live in the age of the internet and more than several useful sites are mentioned in this volume. Also handy for readers who wish to remain up to date, is that anyone who purchases this book direct from Sweet & Maxwell will have the option if they so choose, of having their names recorded so that they can receive information about updating supplements issued approximately annually.

Another notable feature of the book include the many references to decisions not -- or not yet -- published in the law reports, (on patent and IP cases) but available elsewhere, such as in the British Library, The Times, and so forth.

While noting that this highly regarded and authoritative work of reference is an indispensable purchase for patent attorneys, lawyers in other specialisms will also appreciate its value, particularly in what Floyd refers to as ‘the new legal landscape’ in which profound changes in European patent law are taking place. It is worth pointing out here that the book presents the insights and commentary of almost two-dozen expert contributors, including barristers and solicitors as well as patent attorneys.

That said the book has over 1,600 pages of detail and is designed for ease of use with numbered paragraphs throughout, six appendices and a massive index at the back. Also note the research sources which include tables of cases, statutes, statutory instruments and court rules as well as tables of European Patent Office decisions. There is also a table of International Conventions, Treaties and Related Rules and Regulations… and a table of European Patent Office Guidelines.

Protected for the most part by patent law in all its intricacies, inventions and inventiveness have collectively become a prime driving force of economic progress over the centuries.

It is therefore not unfair or unreasonable today to say that this definitive work should be considered an essential purchase for all practitioner libraries.

The editors have stated the law as at January 2016.
