About the Author
The late Ron McCarthy had been a professional modelmaker since leaving school at the age of 14. His first job during the Second World War was building 100ft-to-the-inch Admirally recognition vessels. He was also a member of the team which built the model of the Mulberry Harbour. After the war he worked for a number of years building shipbuilders' models. He built many sailing ship models and was a regular contributor to the journal Model Shipwright.

Wonderful book - but not necessarily for the novice

Anyone considering this book is obviously experienced in, or interested in, building models of sailing ships. Those who are already experienced in building sailing ship models will likely have the necessary background to appreciate this well-written tome. It is clear and concise in describing a plank-on-frame build of a very modest scale (approx. 14 inch hull length) model of a 1752-era British frigate (the Cruiser). The author presents the build exercise in a very approachable (and not at all intimidating) manner.
However, for those who are not experienced model ship builders, this can still be a very good book, provide you have some background. To wit:
Models of sailing ships consist of essentially three different types: (i) solid hull, in which a solid block of wood is used for the hull; (ii) plank-on-bulkhead (POB), in which the hull is formed from solid wall bulkheads spaced apart along the length of the ship, and the planking is applied over the outer surface of the bulkheads (and most suppliers of wooden model kits provide this type of construction); and (iii) plank-on-frame (POF) construction, wherein the hull is formed from "U" and/or "V" shaped "frames" that are spaced apart along the length of the ship, and the planking is applied over both the outer and inner surfaces of the frames. POF construction is nearest to the "real thing". Pretty much POF construction of a ship model is for the purist, since a fully planked POF model is nearly indistinguishable in external appearance from a POB model. But if your goal is not just to build a ship model, but to replicate the original build experience (in scale), then POF building is the way to go. That said, this book is a "must read" for any ship modeler wanting to get into POF model ship building. HOWEVER: the author does assume some familiarity on the part of the reader with wooden sailing ship construction and ship terms. To that end, for the novice I highly recommend supplementing this book with the following books (as regards hull construction - rigging is a whole different subject): (i) Building the Wooden Fighting Ship (by James Moore); and (ii) A Sea Of Words (by Dean King). The former text is a description of how wooden sailing ships were actually built - an essential understanding for any model ship builder regardless of the type of model construction you wish to undertake. (And I would recommend reading this book first.) The latter text is a lexicon of ship terms you will need to know in order to appreciate Building Plank on Frame Ship Models, and indeed any model ship building exercise.
Regarding the author (Ron McCarthy), he built ship models professionally for 56 years, so he knows what he's talking about.
So, if you are an experienced model shipbuilder wanting to move from POB to POF construction, this is a great book by itself. But if you are a novice model shipbuilder wanting to gain a fuller understanding of the building of sailing ships (and models thereof), this book (while still a great read) will need to be supplemented with some additional reading in order for you to fully appreciate the book. In any event, for the dedicated builder of model sailing ships, this book is an essential tome to add to your library.

I believe this delightful novel by Briar Kit Esme is a wonderful and creative example of generosity, doing the right thing at the right time, and passing on the blessings that have been given to us.
Yes, it is better to give than to receive and no good deed goes unnoticed!
This novel is lyrical and definitely something people can hum along with.

Great for preparing for CDL school

This is a very good text to prepare you for CDL school. I read it before going to school and it greatly helped keep up during the actual schooling. (My school used a different book but having read this one beforehand, it made the nightly homework readings a snap while attending school.)

I've been driving over a year now and am still glad I bought this book.

Comprehensive guide to trucking and trucking equipment. This is a wonderful resource, very thorough, easy to read and I used this as a reference and refresher many times. If you have the foresight to read this book before attending a trucking school then you will be well prepared for handling your job.

To prepare for the trucking lifestyle you need a book like "Secrets the Trucking Companies Don't Want You to Know!". To prepare for the professional tasks (equipment inspection, driving, logging, etc.) then you need this book!

About the Author

Marc Nichanian was Professor of Armenian Studies at Columbia University from 1996 to 2007 and is currently Visiting Professor at Sabanci University, Istanbul, in the Department of Cultural Studies. His publications in English include The Historiographic Perversion and Writers of Disaster.
G.M. Goshgarian has translated from the Armenian the first part of Hagop Oshagan's epic novel Remnants, which won a PEN translation award in 2009 and the translations in Marc Nichanian's Writers of Disaster.

Jeff Fort is Assistant Professor of French at the University of California, Davis, the translator of a number of books by authors including Maurice Blanchot, Jacques Derrida, and Jean-Luc Nancy, and the author of The Imperative to Write: Destitutions of the Sublime in Kafka, Blanchot, and Beckett (Fordham).

About the Author

Nick Evans, BSc, MD, FRCS (Orth), is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in sport injury. He studied medicine at the University of London, England, and trained in orthopedic surgery at the University Hospital of Wales. Evans gained additional skills in arthroscopic surgery at the Southern California Center for Sports Medicine and the University of California at Los Angeles.

Evans is a highly regarded authority on strength training, nutrition, and weight training injuries. He is an expert on musculoskeletal anatomy and has written for numerous scientific publications. Evans is the author of the book Men’s Body Sculpting and was a regular columnist for MuscleMag International and Oxygen Women’s Fitness magazines. He is also featured in several instructional DVDs on weight training.

Evans practices and resides in North Yorkshire, England.

ABOUT THE ILLUSTRATOR
William P. Hamilton is a medical illustrator with extensive anatomical training and 30 years of experience. He illustrates kinesiology columns in Muscular Development, Fitness Rx for Women, and Fitness Rx for Men, and he has written articles and done illustrations for Pure Power magazine. Additionally, Hamilton has more than 40 years of weightlifting and bodybuilding experience, having competed in both disciplines. He holds a master's degree (postbaccalaureate certificate, or PBC) in medical illustration from The Ohio State University, is a board-certified medical illustrator (CMI), and serves as an active member of the Association of Medical Illustrators, Graphic Artists Guild, and Guild of Natural Science Illustrators. Hamilton resides in Marquette, Michigan, with his wife, Jacqueline.

Not what I expected, but still informative!

The book doesn't go "in-depth" on any of the movements, just takes two pages to explain each exercise (step-by-step, trajectory, grips, range of motion, things like that) along with anatomical illustrations. Note that the book is kinda small when it comes to dimensions, so it doesn't really include THAT much information for a book that's almost 200 pages.

It really doesn't touch on anything outside this basic premise.

Still, I think this is an *essential* book for beginner and intermediate bodybuilders and health enthusiasts, the science is simple and easy to understand, the illustrations are PERFECT and very informative, the book is nicely organized.

My favorite thing about the book is how it explains different grips and position and how subtle differences in technique can target different areas and help you make the best out of your workouts, very handy reference.

To summarize, while book doesn't offer anything too complex or advanced; I still think it's essential for anyone who takes the sport seriously, and at $13.5 (at the time of this writing), you can't go wrong!

EDIT: I borrowed "Strength Training Anatomy" from a friend, and I must say, it contains much, MUCH more information than "Bodybuilding Anatomy". But that's not to say it's better or worse! Here are some key differences:

*As stated, STA has much more information than BBA, they're not even comparable in this department.
*The drawings in STA are more complex but sometimes less informative.
*STA has much more information on the given exercise, while BBA focuses more on different grips and trajectories.
*STA also covers more ground when it comes to injuries and such (something BBA doesn't really touch on at all).
*BBA is much easier to read through and understand, it's much more "user friendly".
*BBA explains how the muscle group works and how it is composed before starting with the exercises. STA has none of that, goes straight forward to exercises.

Which one should you get? If you're a beginner/intermediate lifter, go with BBA, otherwise, go for STA.

OUTSTANDING reference!

I have been a personal trainer for 4 years, am halfway through an exercise science degree complete with sports medicine and kinesiology courses, and this book STILL helps me. I keep one on my desk at all times, and refer to it for my clients who have pretty good definition but want to target specific areas for more growth/hypertrophy. The pictures will help even the newest beginner to weightlifting understand the science, proper form, and mechanics involved with resistance exercise. It's not about getting big and bulky - it's a map of the muscles and how they move. I use the pictures to explain ideas and techniques to my clients, and I have given 3 of these away as gifts to people who still refer to this book after owning it for years. I sincerely and wholeheartedly recommend it to ANYONE who lifts - beginner or professional!

Just What I Needed - Grip Information

If you are new to weight lifting and want to learn about grip positioning on machines and barbells and how it makes a difference, then I recommend this book. I think it's a must have for anyone starting out in weight lifting. It has helpful illustrations and each exercise is explained in an easy to understand format. As stated by another reviewer, it does not go into in-depth about muscle anatomy but it's sufficient information for beginners and intermediate lifters who don't want or need too much detail. If you want more in-depth anatomy information, I recommend Strength Training Anatomy Workout II by Frederic Delavier and Michael Gundill.

I am well conversant of Hindi Songs but this book has only few songs and that too vague songs that you have never heard of. It is NOT a comprehensive list. 4 songs per page max.....!! Waste of $$s.

Well done Catherine Burns and The Moth!

Let me begin this review with my impression of the exterior design of this book. I typically don't purchase hard back books for the sake of comfortability. I like the feel of a paperback and often travel with books so the lighter the weight the better. This book, however, is amazingly comfortable to hold and the gold embossed cover design is so incredibly gorgeous a paperback cover simply would not do it justice.

As an avid Moth listener and book collector, I was thrilled to add this to my collection and ordered two copies pre-sale. When it arrived I immediately began reading and was thoroughly impressed with the sequence of the stories and how lightly the original content was edited. I have heard a lot of these stories on the podcast and reading them was just as good, if not better, as hearing them live.

I've given a copy of this book to a dear friend as a gift and am considering buying several more copies to distribute as everyone should have this book in their life.

Excellent book

I am a huge fan of the Moth podcast, and I worried that reading these stories would not be the same as hearing them in the tellers' own voices. All These Wonders is a great read though, and a hugely diverse collection of stories. I cannot wait to pass this on to my teenage son, it is amazing to be able to read about so many life experiences in one book.

Story telling at its best

If you love story telling, you'll love this book. It's filled with wonderful stories that will not just entertain you but transport you to different parts of the world, allow you to experience different lives, but best of all, celebrate humanity. It's a wonderful book that just makes you feel good; it's hard to put down.

And if you love Moth Radio, then of course you'll love this great collection of those stories.
