This textbook provides a thoroughly modern alternative to other introductory Nuclear Engineering textbooks that have not been updated significantly over the last 20 years. Printed in full color, this textbook combines an accessible, student-friendly overview of nuclear physics, nuclear reactor design, thermal-hydraulic systems, fuel cycles, safety, and computational methods. To convey the evolution of nuclear science and engineering, historical and biographical features are interwoven throughout the text, and brought to life through portraits, photographs, and other illustrations. Nuclear reactor designs, including the most recent examples, are analyzed and compared in detail, and the role of internet tools in analysis and design is explored. The text follows a well-structured pedagogical approach, based on careful, consistent explanation and topic development, which is supported by numerous color images, key equations, worked examples, lists of key web links for research, short answer questions, and a wealth of chapter problems. Extensive tables are included for reference, and a complete Solutions Manual and .pdf slides of all figures are available to qualified instructors who adopt the text.

Review

"The author presents a fresh approach to the fundamental science and engineering related to nuclear power generation. Difficult concepts are explained in a simple way that will make it easier for students to grasp. The author has gone to great lengths to make the content interesting and uses numerous graphical illustrations to help explain the theories. The content is comprehensive and covers topics that would generally only be found in a collection of textbooks."
― John Robberts, Design Point Consulting Engineers (Pty) Ltd, South Africa

"This book covers a lot of the material used in most sophomore and junior year undergraduate nuclear engineering courses. There are a large number of review questions and homework problems at the end of each chapter that will aid the student in learning the material. The chapters tend to stand alone so that the instructor can select the chapters of interest as needed for their course. Hence, one could easily use this same textbook for a three or four semester sequence of undergraduate courses. In addition, it would be the perfect book for an introductory graduate level course for those students who do not have an undergraduate nuclear engineering degree. The textbook is written in an easy to understand manner which also makes it conducive to self-study by nuclear engineers or other persons in industry who are interested in the topic. Moreover, this textbook can serve as a single reference for use in taking the Professional Engineer’s Exam in Nuclear Engineering."
― Mark Pierson, Virginia Tech, USA

Woman With a Gun CD: A Novel, by Phillip Margolin

Visiting an art museum exhibiting a retrospective of the work of acclaimed photographer Kathy Moran, aspiring novelist Stacey Kim is stunned by the picture at the center of the show—the famous Woman with a Gun, which won a Pulitzer Prize and launched the artist's career. Shot from behind, the enigmatic black-and-white image depicts a woman in a wedding dress standing on the shore at night, facing the sea. In her hands, clasped behind her back, she holds a six-shooter.

The image captures Stacey's imagination, and raises a host of compelling questions. Obsessed with finding answers, she soon discovers the identity of the woman, who is a suspect in a ten-year-old murder investigation. Convinced that proof of the woman's guilt, or innocence, is somehow connected to the photograph, Stacey embarks on a relentless investigation. But Kathy Moran isn't talking. Stacey must find a way to get to the reclusive photographer, and get her to talk, or the truth about what happened that day will stay forever hidden in the shadows.

The Templar Legacy: A Novel (Cotton Malone Book 1), by Steve Berry

BONUS: This edition contains an excerpt from Steve Berry’s The King's Deception and a Cotton Malone dossier.

The ancient order of the Knights Templar possessed untold wealth and absolute power over kings and popes . . . until the Inquisition, when they were wiped from the face of the earth, their hidden riches lost. But now two forces vying for the treasure have learned that it is not at all what they thought it was–and its true nature could change the modern world.

Cotton Malone, one-time top operative for the U.S. Justice Department, is enjoying his quiet new life as an antiquarian book dealer in Copenhagen when an unexpected call to action reawakens his hair-trigger instincts–and plunges him back into the cloak-and-dagger world he thought he’d left behind.

It begins with a violent robbery attempt on Cotton’s former supervisor, Stephanie Nelle, who’ s far from home on a mission that has nothing to do with national security. Armed with vital clues to a series of centuries-old puzzles scattered across Europe, she means to crack a mystery that has tantalized scholars and fortune-hunters through the ages by finding the legendary cache of wealth and forbidden knowledge thought to have been lost forever when the order of the Knights Templar was exterminated in the fourteenth century. But she’s not alone. Competing for the historic prize– and desperate for the crucial information Stephanie possesses–is Raymond de Roquefort, a shadowy zealot with an army of assassins at his command.

Welcome or not, Cotton seeks to even the odds in the perilous race. But the more he learns about the ancient conspiracy surrounding the Knights Templar, the more he realizes that even more than lives are at stake. At the end of a lethal game of conquest, rife with intrigue, treachery, and craven lust for power, lies a shattering discovery that could rock the civilized world–and, in the wrong hands, bring it to its knees.

From Publishers Weekly
Berry goes gnostic in this well-tooled Da Vinci Code-knockoff, his fourth novel (The Romanov Prophecy). Ex-U.S. Justice Department agent Cotton Malone is intrigued when he sees a purse snatcher fling himself from a Copenhagen tower to avoid capture, slitting his own throat on the way down for good measure. Further snooping introduces him to the medieval religious order of the Knights Templar and the fervid subculture searching for the Great Devise, an ancient Templar archive that supposedly disproves the Resurrection and demolishes traditional Christian dogma. The trail leads to a French village replete with arcane clues to the archive's whereabouts, and to an oddball cast of scholar-sleuths, including Cassiopeia Vitt, a rich Muslim woman whose special-ops chops rival Malone's. Malone and company puzzle over the usual Code-inspired anagrams, dead language inscriptions and art symbolism, debate inconsistencies in the Gospels and regale each other with Templar lore, periodically interrupting their colloquia for running gun battles with latter-day Templar Master Raymond de Roquefort and his pistol-packing monks. The novel's overcomplicated conspiracies and esoteric brainteasers can get tedious, and the various religious motivations make little sense. (Thankfully, the author soft-pedals the genre's anti-Catholicism.) But lively characters and action set pieces make this a more readable, if no more plausible, version of the typical gnostic occult thriller. (Feb.)

From Booklist
The Knights Templar, a small monastic military order formed in the early 1100s to protect travelers to the Holy Land, eventually grew and became wealthy beyond imagination. In 1307, the French king, feeling jealous and greedy, killed off the Templars, and by 1311, the last master, Jacques de Molay, was burned at the stake. The whereabouts of the Templars' treasure--and their secrets--have been the subject of legend ever since. Now, a new thriller trieas to follow in the steps of The Da Vinci Code.

There's a secret about early Christianity at the core of Berry's Templar Legacy, but he dispenses the clues too slowly. The cat-and-mouse game between Cotton Malone, a former Justice Department agent, and a modern-day order of Knights Templar is weighed down with too much confusing backstory about the Templars' connection to Rennes-le-Chateau and the mystery that surrounds it. (The real-life town plays a part in The Da Vinci Code as well.) Like Dan Brown, Berry draws on the seminal nonfiction work Holy Blood, Holy Grail for many of his themes. After nearly grinding to a halt through all the premise building, the novel finally gathers steam in the last 100 pages or so, concluding with a revelation that seems refreshingly clear after the many convoluted twists that precede it. Until the next Dan Brown opus is released, this should hold devotees. Ilene Cooper

Fun read with a pinch of alternative theology
By Charles E. Brown
A fun read in much the same vain as the Da Vinci Code and an Indiana Jones movie. At the end of the book Berry describes what was fact, what was fiction and what was gray area between the two.

My only quibble is that he sometimes frames what is fairly commonly known Biblical history and tries to make it sound like scholarly knowledge known only to a few. But, then again, he wrote this for mass consumption and most people probably would not know those common facts.

Overall a fun read combining the Knights Templar, a smattering of alternative theology and a spy novel.

Boring....
By Andronike
The story was potentially a good one, but it turned out to be so boring that I had to force myself to finish it. Apparently the author Steve Berry
improves in his later novels. Also the dialog was often inane, especially in Stephanie's case. Hard to believe this book was a best seller.
But the author deserves credit for using the Templar history and I learned a lot by reading this book.

Cotton Malone is such a complex character. and he deals with such complex characters. the situation is so fraught with emotion with the balance between knowledge and ignorance, loss and finding again, it really keeps you glued.

L'Age d'or (BFI Film Classics), by Paul Hammond

In one of the great collaborations of cinema history, L'age d'or united the geniuses of Luis Buuel and Salvador Dali in the making of a uniquely savage blend of visual poetry and social criticism. One of the outstanding works of the Surrealist movement, L'Age d'or was banned and vilified for many years in many countries, becoming justly legendary for its subversive eroticism and its furious dissection of "civilized" values.
In a remarkable, intuitive reading of L'Age d'or, Paul Hammond interweaves a detailed account of the extraordinary circumstances of its production with a dazzling interpretation of its aesthetic and political nuances. At once authoritative and polemical, this is a study entirely in tune with its subject, a fitting accompaniment to one of the major landmarks of world cinema.

Amazon.com Review
If you haven't seen L'Age D'or, you're missing out on one of the great classics of cinematic surrealism. Directed by the great Luis Buuel and written by Buuel and Salvador Dali, L'Age D'or is rife with nonsensical dialogue and bizarre, disjunctive images. In it, romantic lovers prostrate themselves before statues, Jesus appears as a monstrous hedonist, and the acts of copulation and defecation are linked. The film is alternately shocking, haunting, and outrageously funny.

Paul Hammond's guide to L'Age D'or is as twisty and elliptical as the film itself. As he walks us through its "plot," his enthusiastic and punning prose provides data about the making of the film, Buuel and Dali's peculiar obsessions, the Freudian underpinnings of the work, and the meaning of its images, particularly of its chief metaphor, the scorpion. --Raphael Shargel

A Book On Murdering (possible spoilers)
By A Customer
The murdering performed in L'age D'or is definitely rendered aesthetically in many forms. Among other forms, one could also dispute that L'age D'or attacks Freudian based ideas, which are depicted and utilized in the film with derision
Freudian theories were prominent during the reign of Surrealism. Andre Breton had become a leading student in the field of psychology, soon establishing Freudian ideals in the Surrealist manifesto. Among the psychological symbols presented in L'age D'or are: displacement of a phallus for Apollo's big toe, images of rod shaped objects hitting water, an anal-expulsive scene set in a lover's fantasy, a woman with a bandage on her finger, and a hand recklessly polishing bottles and kitchen utensils.
It is apparent that L'age D'or has represented Luis Bunuel's anti-clerical sentiments. In addition, the film rejects the notion of diplomacy for purposely shocking the viewer and offending those who cherish the concept of class society.
The film's structure is very fragmented but still possesses a linear narrative format. In this manner Bunuel had relinquished previous conventions to filmmaking and doubly attacks structure and the viewers preconceived principles for watching a film.
In L'ge D'or (or simply The Golden Age) Bunuel presents a tale of two lovers whose romantic sentiments and erotic activities are being thwarted by middle-class values and ideologies. In his autobiography, Bunuel described the lovers conflict as a l'amour fou, or an "impossible force that brings two people together and the subsequent impossibility of them ever becoming one."
Subsequently, the two lovers begin to share their emotions in bizarre ways: tumbling on chairs, biting fingers and toes, sucking profusely on inanimate objects. However, the turning point of the film presents the jealousy of the protagonist, when his amorist falls in love with a middle-class conductor. Thus L'age D'or then vociferates a cataclysm of emotions and subconscious imagery.
... Although incomprehensible to a majority, the climax of the film is intentionally ambiguous but metaphorically is another one of Bunuel scathing assault on organized religion.
Salvador Dali has proffered the idea that the images of Surrealism will set an abominable precedent on the ways we view reality. Likened to Dada, Surrealism had attacked the conventions of art by presenting nihilistic ideas to an audience accustomed with Fauvism and Cubist banalities.
Likewise, Surrealist artists have deconstructed the principles of art by exhibiting in their mediums the worlds of absurdism and the unconscious mind. By these aesthetic practices, our judgments of reality have been considerably altered and have now taken a new standpoint.
As a supplement to Dali's statement, Bunuel described Surrealist cinema as "a passionate call to murder." In relation to Bunuel's quotation, it is ostensible that the murdering performed in L'age D'or is directed at the hierocratic doctrines of the Roman Catholic Church and bourgeois values.
Bunuel had expressed his ambivalence for religious conviction by stating "Thank God I'm an atheist." By the same token, the film L'age D'or affirms a deep-seated indifference as well as an utter indignation for Roman Catholic dogma.
During the critical point of the film, Bunuel establishes his protagonist development where after being rejected by his would be lover, the character begins to ravish an immaculately set bedroom belonging to a bourgeois resident. Subsequently, the hero (or antihero) purposely deposits cherished objects out of the window.
Among these items are: an accumulation of pillow feathers, a christmas tree that is set ablaze, a live Roman Catholic bishop in full regalia, and a stuffed giraffe.
Among the aforementioned discarded objects, Bunuel clearly exemplifies his religious opinion most notably with the discarding of the Catholic bishop. In addition, one may argue that what the protagonist is doing is presumably related to Bunuel's own wish: a purging of oppressive theological icons.
In addition, one could say that the film is murdering the audience or viewer by displaying surrealistic pessimism and confounding imagery. Moreover, wide populations of viewers were doubly offended by the film blasphemous and utterly absurd ideas.
During the film's premier, a nationalistic Catholic organization known as The King's Henchman (who belonged to the Action Franaise of France) proceeded to throw bottles of ink and jars of acid onto the screen. This incident was precipitated due to the fact that L'age D'or presented a sequence where a religious sacrament was juxtaposed with a beautiful woman's leg.
But is this still shocking? Apparently not by today's standards
After leaving the screening, the group bombarded the theater's adjacent gallery and deliberately ruined the paintings of some renowned Surrealist artist, most notably Max Ernst, whose canvas bore huge slashes in it.

By this example, L'age D'or had an utmost affect on its audience, eventually becoming censored in several countries for several years ---even to this day it is rare to see a screening of this film.
In short, a Surrealist film like L'age D'or may shock or appall audiences with its use of absurd and blasphemous sequences and subject matter. Nevertheless, one can also acquire a new perspective on the societal values and class systems presented in the film.

Enlightening and playful diegesis of a provocative classic.
By darragh o'donoghue
When 'L'Age D'Or' was released in 1930, the few mainstream cinemas equipped with sound refused to show it. Its exhibition in a small art-house sparked vicious vandalism from right-wing groups; under pressure from the Parisian Chief of Police, the film was withdrawn and remained unseen for 50 years except for poor pirate copies. Raucously erotic, politically satirical and provocatively sacreligious, it is easy to see even today how this Surrealist masterpiece caused so much offence - laced with imagery sublimating onanism, famous scenes include the putrefaction of four bishops on a Mallorcan cliff-top; repeatedly frustrated erotic trysts; the gratuitous kicking of a dog and a blind war veteran; the cold-blooded shooting of a young boy by his father; a restaging of de Sade's infamous novel '120 Days of Sodom', with the murderous libertine Blangis played by Christ; and a crucifix nailed with women's scalps.
Paul Hammond's monograph is an indispensable gloss on this dense, allusive, but hilarious film. Although imbued with a Surrealist aesthetic - with creative input from the movement; cameos by Max Ernst, Paul Eluard and Velentine Penrose; the visual influence of Magritte and the narrative disruptions of Peret - Hammond shows how 'L'Age D'or' fundamentally engages with Bunuel's love for Hollywood, in particular the slapstick of Keaton and Langdon, the social comedies of Lubitsch and Stroheim, and the amour fou melodramas of Borzage, which he reworked, burlesqued and homaged (Bunuel despised the 'avant-garde' or 'art' film). He reinstates the important creative contribution of now-despised co-scenarist Salvador Dali, who provided many of the film's best gags and its running imagery, as well as its 'critical-paranoid' methodology - the pair's aim was to show 'reality's adjustment to the unconscious'. He brilliantly traces the film's equally remarkable production, and how its crises shaped 'L'Age D'Or''s aesthetic (for instance, unusable footage led Bunuel to use stock scientific film for the famous opening 'documentary' scorpion sequence). He explains the political, sexual and Freudian allusions scattered throughout, as well as the many in-jokes - much of the imagery is generated from word-play. His recreation of the amazing cultural milieu of which the film was a part, a Parisian world of intense culture, politics, sexuality, friendship and comically bourgeois family problems.
Although his tracing of the film is linear, Hammond rejects systematic analysis in favour of a 'delire d'interpretation', picking up clues from the imagery, film-making or background and wending many fascinating and original interpretive avenues. The reader should be warned however: Hammond assumes a lot of prior knowledge (you are expected to know who Peret and Brunius were, or what happened at the Saint-Pol-Roux dinner); while sentences such as the following are not uncommon: 'As well as functioning oneirically, 'L'Age D'Or' is a fine example of Shklovskian retardation'; 'In the end he toned down the galimatias, although the diegetic effect remains dyslexic'. Best have a dictionary and google handy!

Good for English study, but insufficient for the TOEFL test
By A Customer
This book contains several useful ways to abound English vocabulary. BUT,vocabulary questions in the TOFEL test are all synonom questions, and most of those in the test are academic words rather than daily-life words. The words in this book seems a bit far from toefl questions. If you have only short time left for preparing toefl, I would recommend other directly-toefl-related vocabulary books like the one from Barron's.

Body and Character in Luke and Acts: The Subversion of Physiognomy in Early Christianity, by Mikeal C. Parsons

Early Christianity developed in a world where moral significance was often judged based upon physical appearance alone. Exploring the manifestations of this ancient "science" of physiognomy, Parsons rightly shows how Greco-Roman society, and by consequence the author of Luke and Acts, was steeped in this tradition. Luke, however, employs these principles in his writings in order to subvert the paradigm. Using as examples the bent woman (Luke 13), Zacchaeus (Luke 18), the lame man (Acts 3-4), and the Ethiopian eunuch (Acts 8), Parsons shows that the Christian community―both early and present-day―is established only in the image of Jesus Christ.

Review
"Not many books really break new ground. This one does. Parsons cast Luke's descriptions of the bent woman, Zacchaeus, the lame man, and the Ethiopian eunuch in a new light and shows how the gospel radically challenges cultural conventions and speaks a word of grace."―Alan Culpepper, Dean, McAfee School of Theology

"With a stunning command of both ancient sources and contemporary scholarship, Parsons offers a trove of fresh insights on physically challenged figures in Luke and Acts. Readers of this carefully argued work will never look at the bent woman, the diminutive Zacchaeus, the lame man (Acts 3), and the Ethiopian eunuch the same way again. Deformed bodies (by conventional standards) pose no barriers to transformed character through dynamic encounters with the Lukan Jesus and his emissaries. Such experiences mount a poignant resistance to prejudicial and superficial profiling in Luke's day―and ours."―F. Scott Spencer, Professor of New Testament, Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond

"Parsons trains his eagle eye on details missed by most scholars. The results are fascinating and unexpected, throwing fresh light on attitudes to bodily characteristics in Luke's day before bringing us back to our world with a theological jolt."―Graham Stanton (1940-2009), Lady Margaret's Professor of Divinity, University of Cambridge

How the gospel writer and historian challenges ancient cultural conventions

"Not many books really break new ground. This one does. The ancient texts on physiognomy--the pseudoscience of interpreting a person's character on the basis of his or her physical characteristics--have been overlooked by New Testament scholarship, but after reviewing these texts Parsons explores the use and subversion of physiognomy by Luke. The results are intriguing and cast Luke's descriptions of the bent woman, Zacchaeus, the lame man, and the Ethiopian eunuch in a new light. In yet another way, Parsons shows how the gospel radically challenges cultural conventions and speaks a word of grace."--R. Alan Culpepper, dean, McAfee School of Theology

God penetrates outward appearances to see the heart
By Craig de CrossWise
It has been said that one should not judge a book by its cover, meaning one should not judge a man's character by his outer physical features. Yet, according to the research of Mikeal Parsons, assessing a person's morality based on their physical attributes is precisely what was done in ancient Greece and Rome, as there was an assumed correlation between the two. For example, according to third century AD writer Pseudo-Aristotle, "soul and body react on each other; when the character of the soul changes, it changes also the form of the body, and conversely, when the form of the body changes, it changes the character of the soul" [p 22]. There was also geographic (`you are where you live'), and zoological (equating traits in animals to humans) stereotyping. This practice is known as physiognomy.

The author traces the methods of physiognomy in ancient Greco-Roman tradition, Jewish culture (to include OT and extra-biblical, pseudepigraphical works), the church "fathers", Pauline NT texts, and other works, before illustrating its contrary usage in the Gospel of Luke and the Book of Acts. If you want to know, among other things, what Paul likely meant in his reference to those whose "god is their belly" (Phil 3:19; cf. Rom 16:18) [pp 50-51], or what Matthew meant by "be wise as serpents" (Matt 10:16), considering the term "serpents" had a negative connotation [p 75], then this book is for you.

But, as the title of this work indicates, the bulk of this book finds Parsons explaining how the Lukan material works as an apologetic over against the conventional understanding and use of physiognomy in the milieu of first century Greco-Roman culture (Luke/Acts has been the primary focus of his professional literary career). The author illustrates how Luke the NT writer, in particular, deftly subverts this pseudoscience of physiognomy:

"...It is noteworthy that nowhere does Luke provide any extended physical description of the main protagonists (Jesus, John the Baptist, and the disciples) or antagonists (religious and political leaders)...This is especially striking in the case of John the Baptist...its inclusion might lead Luke's readers to draw moral inferences based on physical characteristics - the very kind of thing Luke is bent on breaking..." [p 81].

However, Luke does specify physical descriptions of Zacchaeus, the Ethiopian eunuch, and others - those who, by their respective appearances, would be prejudged in the larger culture as individuals possessing undesirable character traits. Yet despite their outward physical appearances, these individuals are worthy (or, perhaps more accurately, made worthy) of His Kingdom, as God knows the heart (Luke 16:15) and "shows no favoritism/partiality" (Acts 10:34).

While scholarly and detailed, this book is a relatively easy read, rather short due to its focus. Unlike many new works, this one breaks new ground. Undoubtedly, future commentaries on Luke and Acts will source Parsons' work here. Very highly recommended.

(My copy is the first edition by Baker Academic from 2006. It appears the Baylor University Press is a straight reissue without any sort of revision.)

Star Girl (Dover Children's Classics), by Henry Winterfeld

"Science fiction and space travel take a sprightly turn," declared Kirkus Reviews of this illustrated tale of a girl who tumbles to Earth from her father's spaceship. The young alien encounters a group of children eager to help her find her way home, but the kids will have to defy the unbelieving grown-ups.
Years ahead of its time, Star Girl was originally published in the 1950s, when interest in space travel and extraterrestrials was approaching new levels. A book to share again and again
By marge
When I was 9 years old, I accompanied my father to work one day. He managed a huge salvage yard, where I was free to crawl into old cars, play with old typewriters and cash registers, imagine that the whole place was my secret paradise, and take home any book that passed my father's approval. It was in this grand place over 30 years ago, that I discovered Henry Winterfeld's "Star Girl." I read it over and over again until one day, by accident, it was damaged beyond repair and rendered illegible. I was heartbroken. From that day on, I searched for another copy and finally located one through an interlibrary loan. I handed it to my children and said, "Read it." For parents wanting to introduce their child to Science Fiction, this story is a real winner. An alien child named "Mo" falls from her father's spaceship and is befriended and hidden by earthling children until the spacecraft's return. "Mo" is lovely, curious, unpredictable and memorable. Her reunion with her father is sweet and reassuring. If you are lucky enough to obtain a personal copy, make sure every child in your life gets an opportunity to read it. "Star Girl" will remain in the reader's heart for many years, and he or she will cherish you for it. Primarily for children 3rd through 6th grade.

An Enchanting, Magical Book
By Nancy Robertson
Star Girl was my favorite book when I was a child. I checked it out of the school library three times and never wanted to return it. I was completely enchanted by the lost little girl (78 years old with violet eyes and gigantic diamonds around her neck) who arrives on earth without her father and is taken in by a human family. I often think about this magical book and think it would delight today's young girls. It is a classic and should be reissued.

It always brings a smile to my face.
By A Customer
My sister is turning 50 this year and I wanted to find her a copy of Star Girl. As children we read and reread this story together, as sisters, wondering at how beautiful the little girl from another planet was and how glorious it must be to be the center of attention like she was! I remember it taking me away when I read it and I hope when she rereads it and shows it to her children, they are pulled into it as we were.
