AWESOME TOOL & MESSAGE for saving your marriage

I LOVE this book. The information in this book is so helpful. Watching his show "Marriage Today" encouraged me to get this book, along with quite a few marital issues lol. But I'm laughing now because they're in the past. My husband and I have overcome every obstacle the devil has thrown at us and believe me, there were some BIG ones. But glory be to God!!! He has spoken to me through this book and many other ways as well. I feel like I've highlighted almost the entire book. If you've ever felt like giving up on your marriage or wondered if it could survive certain circumstances, I strongly suggest buying this.

Phenomenal book for engaged couples and any marriage!

This book illustrates God's plan for marriage in a clear, concise manner. It was amazing how much I discovered about marriage (my husband and I have been married for 13 years)! I not only learned things about my husband and his needs, but also how to be the wife God called me to be. It was eye opening to realize all the mistakes I had been making as a wife that caused my husband great pain. My husband says the same of himself: his eyes were opened to the mistakes he made that caused me great pain. With God's help, we have reversed course and now have a strong, vibrant, and fulfilling marriage.

I would recommend this book to any couple, and especially engaged couples. If you want to have a strong marriage and you are willing to "look in the mirror" and take responsibility for areas that you need to change, a personal relationship with God and this book can do miracles in your marriage. Yes, I said miracles.

I would also highly recommend the "One" devotional written by Jimmy Evans. Although written as a 52 week devotional, my husband and I used it as a daily devotional. Our marriage was in trouble at the time and we were desperate for help. We first turned to God and then went through this book together with open hearts and minds that needed healing. As we read the devotional together, we learned to communicate and each sincerely took responsibility for the areas of our marriage where we created pain for our spouse. We changed those behaviors and the end result was and, still is, amazing!

Judging a book partly by its cover

The dictionary seems to be a good reference and resource for grades 3-6+. My reduced rating is for the binding. While the rest of the secondhand book is in great condition, the binding has completely separated from the pages. This is not the sign of a well-made reference book.

The book is in great condition and arrived faster than expected. It appears as if the dictionary is a combination of DK and Oxford. I expected the book to be up to Oxford standards but was disappointed because I found circular definitions: look up one word, definition says it's another word, look up the other word only to find out the definition is the first word. The reference images are great. Seller is very good with rapid fulfillment and description was accurate.

Bought this for my 7 year old grandson. So colorful and illustrative it appears many definitions leap off the page. Instead of using it only as a dictionary, I find myself turning pages and learning many new things and I'm the grandmom.

About the Author
A consulting engineer residing in Montgomery, texas, Heinz. P. Bloch has held machinery-oriented staff and line positions with Exxon affiliates in the United States, Italy, Spain, England, The Netherlands, and Japan. His career spanned several decades prior to his 1986 retirement as Exxon Chemical's regional machinery specialist for the USA. Since his retirement from Exxon, he has been in demand throughout the world as a consultant and trainer in the areas of failure avoidance, root cause failure identification, and reliability improvement. Mr. Bloch is the author/co-author of thirteen books and over 200 other publications on subjects related to machinery reliability and failure avoidance. He is the Reliability and Equipment Editor of Hydrocarbon Processing magazine and has served as chair of the annual conference program for Hydrocarbon Processing's Process Plant Reliability Conference for a number of years.

Fred K. Geitner is a registered Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario, Canada, engaged in process machinery consulting. He retired from Imperial Oil with 20 years of service as an engineer.

The magnum opus of mental arithmetic!

Imagine transforming your mind into a slide-rule with the added bonus of extra precision! "Dead Reckoning" is the ONLY book of its kind, running the gamut from ordinary operations like multiplication and division to roots (square, higher-order, and reciprocal), logarithms and their inverses, and finally trigonometric functions and their inverses. The book also contains other gems such as factorization techniques, continued fractions (for creating rational approximations), and also an algorithm which permits mental square root extractions to arbitrary precision. Those who feel daunted by symbolic formulas needn't worry, the book is replete with examples which provide both clarity and realism to the presentation. The author has an engaging style and has obviously taken great pains; the clarity of the exposition is excellent throughout. Moreover, the text is profusely referenced for those wishing to further pursue a topic that piques their interest. The techniques and strategies contained therein are as practical as they are efficient and are equally amenable to quick pen-and-paper calculations for those not interested in pursuing mental computations. Great Idea, Poorly Proofread

There are many books designed to teach rapid calculation without aid of a machine. The topic that sets this one apart, and the entire reason I bought it is that it covers logarithms. Unlike most of the books in this genre this one does not waste space with endless examples and practice problems, anybody can create there own. It does back an impressive array of methods to increase speed in pencil and paper calculation, and makes it clear that each method has a time and place for maximal performance.

This book was well thought out, but unfortunately not well proofread. For example, pp 14 and 15 have the following mistakes:

"125 x n = 8n,000 / 8" should read "125 x n = n,000 / 8"

"37 can be represented as 111/4" should read "37 can be represented as 111/3"

The typos caused me to verify every method presented, but could lead unsuspecting travelers down the wrong path.

BOTTOM LINE: This books is a wonderful treasury of number sense that is riddled with typos.

Fascinating but not for everyone

If your goal is to learn 'Speed Math' - the ability to do arithmetic quickly and perhaps without pencil & paper, this book is not the best choice. There are several excellent books on this subject. This book is written by a scientist for people with a similar background in math. To read this book without struggling you need strong algebra skills and a familiarity with Taylor series and the like. Typically this means you have taken at least two semesters of calculus. If you have the algebra but not the rest, you can follow this book but it will take some chewing to follow the discussions. However, if you are up for it, this book will take you deeper and further into the theory and practise of hand computation than any other that I have seen. In addition to a fascinating exploration of arithmetical techniques and their theoretical underpinnings, he also covers logarithms and trig functions. Logs are an enormously powerful tool for mental calculation. If you memorize a handful of basic logarithms you can do such stunts as mentaly evaluating numbers to arbitrary powers to a good approximaation.

Kirstie Allsopp is the star of Channel 4's Kirstie's Homemade Home and the co-presenter, with Phil Spencer, of Location, Location, Location and Relocation, Relocation. After working with interior decorator Nikki Haslam, Kirstie worked for Country Living magazine before setting up a property buying business with a friend. Kirstie lives in Devon and West London with her partner Ben Anderson and their two sons and two stepsons.
