About the Author
Helga Kuhse, former Director of the Centre for Human Bioethics at Monash University, Melbourne, is now Senior Honorary Research Fellow at the Centre. She is author and co-author of several books including Caring: Nurses, Women and Ethics (Blackwell 1996), Willing to Listen – Wanting to Die (1995), Individuals, Humans and Persons: Questions of Life and Death (with Peter Singer, 1994). She is the co-founder of the Blackwell journal Bioethics and is co-editor of the accompanying volume A Companion to Bioethics (Blackwell 1999).

Peter Singer is Ira W. DeCamp Professor of Bioethics at the University Center for Human Values, Princeton University. He is the author of Animal Liberation, first published in 1975, and is widely credited with triggering the modern animal rights movement. His Practical Ethics is one of the most widely used texts in applied ethics, and Rethinking Life and Death received the 1995 Australian National Book Council’s Banjo Award for nonfiction. He was the foundation president of the International Association of Bioethics.

Reviewing the interactions between dividend policy and other corporate governance mechanisms, it compares results for the UK and the US with those for other countries such as France, Germany, and Japan, and provides new empirical evidence on corporate governance in continental Europe and its impact on dividends. Focusing on one of the main representatives of this system, Germany, it highlights major differences between the dividend policies of German firms and those of UK or US firms. Conventional wisdom states that German dividends are lower than UK or US dividends, yet on a published-profits basis, the exact converse is true. In addition, the authors demonstrate a link between corporate control structures and dividend payouts, report evidence that the existence of a loss is an additional determinant of dividend changes, and demonstrate that the tax status of the controlling shareholder and the firm's dividend payout are not linked. The conclusions reached in this book have important implications for the current debate on corporate governance, making it invaluable for academics, finance professionals, regulators and legal advisors.

Comprehensive and a lifesaver

I took a two-semester course on Assembly Language Programming, Digital Logic, and Computer Architecture and this book was amazing. We covered the basics of digital logic (binary, octal, and hexadecimal arithmetic, 1s and 2s complement, Boolean algebra, combinational logic, etc.) the first semester so by the time we got to this book in the second semester, we skipped the first two chapters and most of the third and went straight into adders and flip-flops.

The author discusses the organization of A Simple Computer (ASC), but given what little time we had, we were tasked with building a Very Simple Computer (VSC), a primitive 8-bit computer (5-bit memory, 3-bit opcode) capable of performing basic arithmetic. We read just the chapters on combinational circuits, synchronous sequential circuits, organization & programming, hardware design, and memory.

The point is that we only used about half the material in the book and we were able to build an 8-bit computer from TTL chips. If you read the thing cover to cover, you'd be able to build a 16- or 32-bit machine no problem. It was a ton of fun and this book was an absolute lifesaver. Together, the book and course fundamentally changed the way I look at computers and I have a much better understanding of how they operate and what's inside them.

If there was a gap in the literature on Japonisme regarding shunga, it has now been filled by Bru s handsomely designed and illustrated books, which is indeed an important addition to the literature on the subject. About the Author
Ricard Bru (Ph.D. in Art History) has been a professor of Nineteenth-Century Art History at the University of Barcelona and he is currently working for the Institute of Culture of Barcelona. He curated the resent exhibitions "Secret Images: Picasso and the Japanese Erotic Print" (2009), and "Japonisme: The Fascination of Japanese Art" ("Japonismo: La fascinacion por el arte japones") (2013)."

A tremendously scholarly, informative, and lavishly illustrated book, EROTIC JAPONISME is a follow-up (and in part expansion upon) to Bru's outstanding essay in Secret Images: Picasso and the Japanese Erotic Print, tracing the heretofore little-known influence of Japanese erotic art on the West. While most works of this sort might focus on a few popular ukiyo-e artists or fill page after page with graphic shunga, Bru delves into the history of interaction between Japan and the West, investigating the process of discovery, the dealers, and the sources of information that westerners would have had access to, and from there traces the rising development of the "Japonisme" style and "Japonist" artists. A must-have for any student of the style or period.

One particular section that follows and expands on Bru's essay in SECRET IMAGES traces the influence of Hokusai's "Diver and Octopuses" and similar works, noting the timely coincidence of the arrival of the prints as Victor Hugo's novel TOILERS OF THE SEA was published, and the compounded imagery formed an influence on artists such as Picasso, Rodin, and Felicien Rops, among many others.
