Excellent translations

This is a very nice selection of Gogol's greatest stories and plays, capably translated by Christopher English. The translations read far better than other recent versions by Wilks (for Penguin) and Pevear and Volokhonsky (for Vintage). Pevear and Volokhonsky are fine translators, but their more literal approach works better for Dostoevsky and Tolstoy than it does for Gogol. Christopher English translates with a more flowing and rhetorical style that matches the satirical insanity of Gogol. "Diary of a Madman" reads particularly well.

Btw, Robert Maguire did the sterling Penguin Dead Souls, but to the best of my knowledge he never translated Gogol's stories.

Being in the world

This volume would be an excellent choice for anyone looking to get an introduction to Russian literature and Russian realism / existentialism more generally. For this reviewer, highlights include "The Government Inspector", and from the Petersburg Tales, "Nevsky Prospect" and "The Overcoat".

"The Government Inspector" gives a humorous look at corruption in the Russian provinces during the mid-19th century. Reading this play you’ll feel like the plot is something you’ve read or seen before and that’s probably the case, but Gogol was the first to write such a tale. "The Overcoat" as deals with a Petersburg bureaucrat and the one thing that makes his life worth living; a coat. "Nevsky Prospect" highlights two ways in which to deal with the reality of pursuing women romantically. It gives a detailed and unique perspective of two men lusting after two different women. One man’s approach ends in death, the other man’s a near death; fascinating to say the least!

Some readers may grow impatient with Gogol's plots, for they typically unfold at a slow pace. For patient readers, however, they'll likely find Gogol's plots thought-provoking in their underlying statements about perception and how much it relates to one's overall sense of being in the world.

"William Krisel’s Palm Springs: The Language of Modernism is a wonderful book for readers like me, casually interested in residential architecture and its uniquely California development after World War II. In a very personal context, the reader learns of Bill Krisel’s contributions and visions leading to the evolution of Southern California Midcentury Modernism in the Palm Springs/Coachella Valley. Well-documented through narrative, first hand accounts, photographs, and drawings, a history emerges of primarily residential, but also commercial architectural exploration at a time of economic optimism. It chronicles Bill Krisel’s passion for a broader and more holistic residential experience, accessible to the rapidly growing middle class. Here the human spirit can flourish through integration of outdoor and indoor living. Each new suburban residential tract could reflect the local geography and environment and be affordable. Light and lighting, shadow, vista, water, planting, warm natural color, furniture, and textured grounds encourage movement and community. This becomes the new residential experience for many. The dynamic nature of the development of Midcentury Modernism is well developed in a style and language that can be appreciated by the general reader such as myself. I grew up in a Northern California Midcentury Modern residence (Carter Sparks, 1962.) I’m an ordinary man with opinions. About color. About shape. About utility. I prefer a simple line, architecturally speaking. And I like a bit of whimsy, too. What better place to tickle these desires than Palm Springs, California and now there is a beautiful book in the form of a tribute to William Krisel, major architect of the Midcentury Modern design movement which, for Southern California, symbolized the power of the growing middle class during a time of economic expansion and post war optimism. The book is full of photographs and also drawings by Mr. Krisel which he made at the start of each of his projects and which, in and of themselves, are works of art that capture the modern style of the 1950’s and 60’s. Each chapter in the book highlights a perspective of design: location, orientation within the property, wall contour and texture, color, light, shadow, landscape, water elements, indoor/outdoor continuity. All count in the overall effect and success of each project. And all must coalesce into an affordable package. It is a joy to read anecdotes about how Mr. Krisel developed his vision for superb design and affordability in the expanding tract housing market of the 1950’s, but it is equally as interesting to view his designs for individual homes and commercial enterprises. This book is beautifully edited and researched with superb photographs and documents obtained from the Getty Research Institute. It is now an essential part of our Midcentury Modern library. He is a founding board member of the Palm Springs Modern Committee, an organization dedicated to the preservation of Desert Modern architecture and a real estate agent specializing in architectural properties in the Coachella Valley. A Wonderful Start for New Enthusiasts of Mid-Century Architecture as well as Long-Time Fans

Making full disclosure, I have known one of the authors, Chris Menrad, casually over the last 10 years. I am an automotive photojournalist who photographed one of Chris' classic cars at his home in Palm Springs for a magazine feature. He kindly provided a PDF edition of his book for my review.

With that being said, I can't wait to get a hard-copy edition of his and Heidi Creighton's five-star book, William Krisel's Palm Springs: The Language of Modernism. This is a spectacular edition, one that is both scholarly in its comprehensive coverage it gives to William Krisel's body of work and his place in the world of Mid-Century design and architecture as well as serving as a time transport mechanism back to this era, of which I have such fond, personal memories.

In my work I often photograph automobiles together with the architecture of their time, trying to capture in my features this very special time in American life. This book does that within its 224 lavishly illustrated pages, a joy to behold for any student or enthusiast of the era. It is an easy read, an almost perfect balance of text to illustrations and gives the reader an insider's look into what makes this style of architecture so special. Postwar America, starting in the late 1940s was a period of incredible optimism and the homes of this era, many of them modest in their size and scope, perfectly reflected the optimism of what I refer to as the Jet Age, structures and automobiles that work in perfect harmony with each other.

As you look through the book, try to imagine a suburban American family living in one of Krisel's homes, with a big finned sedan in the driveway for dad alongside that symbol of suburbia, a vinyl wood-covered station wagon. It's so easy to imagine that as the 1950s turned into the 1960s, it was an incredible time to grow up and come of age.

A smile came to my face as I turned to the page 50-51 spread as the drawing looked familiar; it was Chris' own home where I photographed several Mid-Century automobiles (for more than a year one such photo was the photo at the top of my Facebook page and is included below). This is where the book excels. It's authors know their subject and are so willing to share their passions for the subject to a wider audience.

The design of the book reflects its era as well, a combination of in-period black and white and color photographs and illustrations. The balance is near perfect and had to reflect hundreds of hours of painstaking research, I imagine so much easier when the authors, living themselves in the environment, had an obvious head start.

With the exception of the book, Julius Shulman: Palm Springs, this is the most essential book on my Mid-Century Modern bookshelf, high praise indeed. If you love Mid-Century architecture as I do, this is a new addition to every fan's personal library.

Isatou held her head up high and soon would close in on Nijau, her village. Raindrops fell all around her, but soon her palm-leaf basket would tumble to the ground to mix with the rain and dirt. Isatou’s fruit was scattered about the ground, but there was no way to carry it. There was some “strange fabric” dancing in the wind, a fabric that would hold her fruit. Her palm-leaf basket would be left behind to “crumble and mix back in with the dirt.” Grandmother Mbombeh frowned at the sight of Isatou’s strange fabric bag. “Plastic,” she exclaimed, “There’s more in the city.”

The plastic bag didn’t last and soon Isatou left it behind. The bags seemed to multiply with blue ones, red one, clear ones, and even purple. There were more and more because “one plastic bag becomes two ... then ten ... then a hundred.” The years passed by and Isatou found herself to be a woman, hardly noticing “the ugliness around her.” The goats had begun eating those very bags, the ugliness she had passed by, and were dying. The goats were foraging in the garbage, eating the bags. Isatou began collecting the bags, but what would she do with them?

This is the amazing story of Isatou, a young woman who empowered others by looking for solutions. Isatou Cheesay watched as garbage began to overtake and destroy Njau, Gambia. Rather than ignore it, she began to gather up the ugliness and turned it into a thing of beauty, “recycled plastic purses.” Other women began to crochet and Isatou’s solution began to reclaim her village. Young students will enjoy learning about her journey in an expanded author’s note. There is a photograph of Isatou and some other women of Njau. In the back of the book is an index, a “Wolof Glossary and Pronunciation Guide, a Timeline (1970s to 2014), and additional recommended book resources to explore.

I highly recommend it!

This is a beautifully illustrated book about how one woman in Gambia, West Africa decided to reduce the amount of plastic bags littering the area and killing animals when they ate them by crocheting items out of the plastic and selling them. I think that the book shows the problems from the plastic bag pollution and how one woman helped to change the situation. This book would be great in elementary school and middle school libraries to use when teaching about pollution and recycling. I have crocheted items from plastic bags and the plastic is not as gentle and comfortable to knit with as yarn or fabric. I received this book free to review from Netgalley and I highly recommend it.

WHY I LIKE THIS BOOK

WHY I LIKE THIS BOOK: One Plastic Bag has so many hooks. First, Miranda incorporates Gambian culture and language into the text, immersing the reader into Isatou’s world. Second, the book has great read aloud-ability. Miranda uses a repeating refrain: “first one, then two, then ten,” which makes kids want to chant along. Finally, who can resist a story about one person seeing an insurmountable problem and taking a small step that leads to a giant change?

About the Author

Willem van Meurs, Ph.D., is the co-inventor of the Human Patient Simulator. He is a consultant at Medical Education Technologies, Inc., and conducts modeling and simulation teaching and research at the University of Porto, Portugal. Dr. van Meurs was the president of the Society in Europe for Simulation Applied to Medicine from 2005-2007. He has published more than 20 full papers in peer-reviewed international journals and books and co-authored eight U.S. patents on modeling and simulation techniques.

a must read by a pioneer in human patient simulation modeling
By no one of consequence
If you are interested in knowing how physiologic simulation design and development works, but have been scared off by other texts, this book is for you. Some modeling books are heavy on the math and quickly lose all but the most mathematically inclined reader. Some modeling books concentrate almost exclusively on the theory because they are written by academicians who lack practical application experience. This book is different! It is written by a pioneer in human patient simulation modeling as one of the developers of the most advanced human patient simulator on the market, that does not have an equal nearly 20 years after its development. Dr. van Meurs teaches the systems engineering approach to model development, emphasizing that simulation for education should be driven by learning requirements, not the other way around. This book is well done because it gives the entire scope and breadth of model development without getting lost in the weeds. Plenty of references are given for those who desire to delve deeper. The book is written in a conversational style with plenty of white space and many illustrations to make the read easy on the eyes and accessible to a broad spectrum of readers. Highly recommend.

I used this book in the context of a class by the author on Modeling in Biomedical Engineering. I can recommed it to anyone who studies similar content.

Is a very concise book, but at the same time you won't miss any content
because it is fortified with physical and electronic examples.
Furthermore, you can take profit of given algoritms and see clearly how
physiological systems work.

Lastly, if you are not familiar with this area of engineering, take a
look because you will be astonished with their potential in health
care.

Excellent biomedical modeling introduction book

This book is what a good engineering book should be all about: it's concise, very explanatory, easy to understand and most importantly, timeless, as many of the examples (and analog relationships) are based on classical electromechanical models and the code examples are presented as flowcharts.

The book is conceptual-model oriented, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for clear and easy to read explanation of biomedical modeling and simulation.
