A non-political book on sufism
By A Customer
I truly enjoyed reading this book. Having read another excellent book by Corbin " Alone with the Alone", I was curious to see what relation is there, if any, between Shiism and Sufis, this book answered my questions in an honest non-political way.

Learn from the masters
By Vineyard
The majority of the books written on Sufism are from authors who have not "tasted" it, and that is the reason they are insufficient, if not misleading. To explain Sufism, or tasawwuf, as a bundle of foreign influences outside Islam is ridiculous. If one wants to borrow, or has the need to borrow, then they would go to the source; be it from Christianity, Zoroastrianism, Hinduism and so forth. They would simply become Christians or Hindus.

Sufism is the kernel of Islam, the very center of its circle. Have there ever been non-genuine Sufi/Muslim practices? Of course, and nowadays more than ever. But that tells us about the condition of people, and their grasp (or lack of) of the core teachings of Islam, not of Islam, and Sufism itself. If one encounters some books written in bad taste does that mean that we should write literature off? That we should boycott masterpieces? That is what some legalism-obsessed fellas seem to suggest nowadays.

That is one of the many points touched. There is further elucidation of the meaning of the mystic quest; the relation between revelation, intellect and reason; description of the spiritual states; the encounter of Islam with other religions; excellent explanation of the root of environmental crisis, and more.

This is a source to learn from if one is a serious seeker, or genuinely interested in knowing something about the reality of Sufism.

A flawed masterpiece
By A. Padela
I read this book a few years ago and was throughly amazed. Nasr exposition of Sufism is excellent. He plunges into history and literature to and brings out profound insight into some fo the aspects of Sufism. He essay on the Sufi Shaykh is wonderful. Nevertheless the book has its flaw. The insertation of perrenial thought and propagation of the Universalvalidity of Religions is dogmatic in certain essay. The author simply goes and concludes that Sufi thought stresses the Universal Validity of Religions. Such a statement if false and goes against the Islamic texts and there explanation. In essence the book is wonderful and contains beneficial knowledge, but at the end the perrenial taint leaves a bitter taste in the mouth. Overall good read but one should take caution about the above mentioned mistake.

Aylin, by Ayse Kulin

Aylin’s body was found in her garden, her hair immaculately styled as usual. Her death came as a shock—after all, who would have wanted someone so admired and talented dead? Who—among the many she’d helped, the few she’d hurt, and all those she’d left behind—might have been driven to murder?

In the course of Aylin’s life, she had been many things: a skinny little girl, a young woman blossoming into a beauty, a princess married to a controlling Libyan prince, a broke medical student determined to succeed. She’d been a seductress, a teacher, a renowned psychiatrist, and a Turkish immigrant remarkably at home as an officer in the US Army. Through it all, she’d loved, been in love, and pursued truth without surrender. Whatever role she’d found herself in, she’d committed to it fully and lived it with her heart, mind, and soul.

From internationally bestselling Turkish author Ayşe Kulin comes Aylin, the story of one woman’s life as she makes her passionate way toward a strange, sudden end.

I was truly fascinated by this book!
By Annie McDonnell
I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Anyone could have killed Aylin. The story opens up with her cleaning lady finding her dead. The coroner marked her death “A Freak Accident”. To say the least….it was freaky.
Then Ayse Kulin takes us back in time to her Great-Great Grandfather, whom Aylin apparently took after. And, we learn all about Aylin's life. Aylin was a strong, smart, talented and accomplished woman. If there was something she wanted to accomplish, she went after it! I was in awe of all that she managed in her life.
When I began reading this book, I had to do some research about Aylin, as this book reads like a Biography. But, it was not a true story. Ayse Kulin wrote this so well….it was very hard to believe that Aylin did not exist. That was very impressive! Well-written, to say the least!
This book has also been translated from Turkish to English; so there are some errors in translation, but it does not ruin story.
I was truly fascinated by this book, and so glad that I read it. You will delve deep into the life of a woman that you will find yourself wanting to learn more about.
Ayse Kulin is an excellent writer. I was impressed.

She draws the reader in to love Aylin, just as many of those around her ...
By Miss Marple of New York
Kulin paints a portrait of an attractive and fascinating character. She draws the reader in to love Aylin, just as many of those around her were mesmerized by her. Her story reads more like a collection of stories, as each section of her life has such a distinct flavor, completely separate from the previous episode. The only single common thread between them is the character of the heroine. A Turkish childhood, marriage to a Libyan prince, medical studies in Switzerland, traveling as a hippie, forging a successful career as a psychiatrist in New York City, being a lieutenant colonel in the US Army and being the wife of a Hollywood film producer -- we revolve from one scenario to the next. Another great book after Last Train To Istanbul, well done Ms Kulin.

The Oxford Project, by Stephen G. Bloom

In 1984, photographer Peter Feldstein set out to photograph every single resident of his town, Oxford, Iowa (pop. 676). He converted an abandoned storefront on Main Street into a makeshift studio and posted fliers inviting people to stop by. At first they trickled in slowly, but in the end, nearly all of Oxford stood before Feldstein's lens. Twenty years later, Feldstein decided to do it again. Only this time he invited writer Stephen G. Bloom to join him, and together they went in search of the same Oxford residents Feldstein had originally shot two decades earlier. Some had moved. Most had stayed. Others had passed away. All were marked by the passage of time.

In a place like Oxford, not only does everyone know everyone else, but also everyone else's brothers, sisters, parents, grandparents, lovers, secrets, failures, dreams, and favorite pot luck recipes. This intricate web of human connections between neighbors friends, and family, is the mainstay of small town American life, a disappearing culture that is unforgettably captured in Feldstein's candid black-and-white portraiture and Bloom's astonishing rural storytelling.

Meet the town auctioneer who fell in love with his wife in high school while ice-skating together on local ponds; his wife who recalls the dress she wore as his prom date over fifty years ago; a retired buck skinner who started a gospel church and awaits the rapture in 2028; the donut baker at the Depot who went from having to be weighed on a livestock scale to losing over 150 pounds with the support of all of Oxford; a twenty-one-year-old man photographed in 1984 as an infant in his father's arms, who has now survived both of his parents due to tragedy and illness.

Considered side-by-side, the portraits reveal the inevitable transformations of aging: wider waistlines, wrinkled skin, eyeglasses, and bowed backs. Babies and children have instantly sprouted into young nurses, truck drivers, teachers, and rodeo riders, become Buddhists, racists, democrats, and drug addicts. The courses of lives have been irrevocably altered by deaths, births, marriages, and divorces. Some have lost God--others have found Him. But there are also those for whom it appears time has almost stood still. Kevin Somerville looks eerily identical in his 1984 and 2004 portraits, right down to his worn overalls, shaggy mane, and pale sunglasses. Only the graying of his lumberjack beard gives away the years that have passed.

Face after face, story after story, what quietly emerges is a living composite of a quintessential Midwestern community, told through the words and images of its residents--then and now. In a town where newcomers are recognized by the sound of an
unfamiliar engine idle, The Oxford Project invites you to discover the unexpected details, the heartbreak, and the reality of lives lived on the fringe of our urban culture.

Review
"For my Creative Writing students the portraits in The Oxford Project really are worth a thousand words. When used as writing prompts, the transformative nature of the portraits help my students practice crafting characters. The portraits have also inspired my students to bring in portraits of themselves as children which they use to spark pieces of writing that explore connections between the yesterday of their childhood and the today of their teen years. This year students will use the Oxford Project as a template to create their own Oxford Project that focuses on the childhood portrait of a relative or neighbor they know who is from an older generation."
--Junius Wright, Academic Magnet High School

"I opened the book for a quick browse and read it from cover to cover before I realized it was nearly three in the morning on a school night, but a more temperate reader would likely enjoy flipping through a section or even opening it to a random page. Photo majors, and anyone else interested in the human condition, should not miss The Oxford Project."
--DCAD Delaware College of Art & Design
http://dcadlibrary.wordpress.com

"What we have in this spellbinding and ambitious and eccentric volume is 'Our Town' and 'Spoon River Anthology' updated and revivified. We also have journalism, in words and in images, at its heart-stopping best and its most poignant...by the final page you feel as if you have both read a novel and seen a movie simultaneously."
--Nieman Reports

"Then-and-now portraits, shown side-by-side, tell one powerful story; in accompanying texts, their beautiful testimonials to time and life and people tell another."
--NPR.org, Best Gift Books 2008

"Each picture is worth a thousand words, and each pair of portraits is a fair trade for an entire novel."
--NPR, Morning Edition

"The product is a hard-to-put-down coffee-table book, with big, striking then-and-now portraits, that pulls you deep into small-town America, with its almost excessive joys. The danger of such a project is that it can make caricatures out of real people - but this book stays true to its life-worn subjects and to the complexities of what would seem to be the most simple of places."
--The Atlantic

"People don't get much more real than this, and there's a heartbreaking, forensic pleasure in paging through the book to stare at the pictures for minutes at a time, looking at the thousands of ways in which the years change each of us."
--The Washington Post

"The book is at once strikingly intimate and expansive...[The Oxford Project has] the sweeping scope and power of Our Town or Spoon River Anthology. It's both personal and historical, which makes Feldstein's achievement doubly absorbing and doubly affecting."
--The Austin Chronicle

"The Oxford Project is an homage to Americana, a photographic record of small-town America and the story of intertwined lives. It is about history, personal and collective, and that ubiquitous force: change. This book, like the facets of human features, is so intriguing, it is nearly impossible to put down."

--The San Antonio Current

"There's something truly remarkable about this book. Art and historical artifact, The Oxford Project provides a glimpse into a real America - not the one dreamed up, and exploited, by pandering politicians (at every point on the political spectrum). This is the real thing, riveting and revelatory.

...The Oxford Project is like a still-life documentary, a narrative about change. This huge, handsome book, with its gatefold photographs, its maps and memories, offers a fascinating piece of contemporary history, a treasure of social and cultural commentary."
--The Philadelphia Inquirer

"Honest, gripping, and incredibly moving...The book design is brilliantly conceived and beautifully produced."
--Black and White magazine

"Fascinating...a time capsule that offers the reader a unique glimpse of the changing face of life in small town America...a fine addition to your personal library."
--Shutterbug magazine

"What a marvelous way to get at 'who we are' as people. This powerful, confessional book draws its strength from the truth that so-called ordinary people, not those with bold-faced names, are actually the heroes of our American drama."
--Ken Burns, Emmy award-winning director of The Civil War

"Cleverly designed and artfully illustrated. Of significance to humanities scholars and socials scientists, as well as general readers, this work provides a good glimpse of small town America."
--Library Journal

"[The] images are a fascinating look at how people age and develop, a kind of real life 'before' and 'after' experiment...an intriguing look at small town America."
--Bookpage

"These photographs and stories are American documentary work at its finest."
--Dale Maharidge, Pulitzer Prize-winning author

"The Oxford Project is an extraordinary undertaking and a fascinating book. These magnificent photos and oral histories make for a can't-put-it-down-read, and prove that the stories we find all around us are the most interesting and important of all. You'll be awed by the poetry in the words, dreams, and faces of Oxford, Iowa.
--Dave Isay, founder of StoryCorps

"A coffee table book that will lead to many discussions. The Oxford Project is also a book to read cover to cover. It is a record of humanity during the last years of the 20th century. Everyone will find something of themselves in the people of Oxford."
--Nancy Quinn, Marketing Director, Harry W. Schwartz Bookshops, Milwaukee

"The arresting lenticular photograph on the cover of this book is a boy, Hunter Tandy in 1984, and as a man in 2005. The diversity of human experiences is engrossing and the photos are captivating. This is an American small town's story but also the story of American lives. Humane, poignant, but also a work of art, The Oxford Project deserves to be in every library and home to remind us of who our neighbors are."
--Catherine Wallberg. Buyer, Harry W. Scwhartz Bookshops, Milwaukee

"To stumble upon a small town like Oxford is one thing - to be able to consider its whole population face by face, at your own leisure, is something else entirely."
--from the Preface, by Gerald Stern

"This book was amazing. Amazing. Many things about people are immutable - often residents would stand the same way for their portraits 20 years apart without noticing it. So much of who we are is shaped by how others see us, but clearly at our core we are all our own person."
--SomewhatBookish.blogspot.com

"The whole endeavor in question is both simple and simply amazing...taken slowly and allowed to unfold (much like the project itself), The Oxford Project had much to reveal and does so beautifully."

Beautiful Paperback Edition
By emmejay
THE OXFORD PROJECT is a profoundly moving book of photographs and short interviews that shows every person (and every town) has a story. I've borrowed it in hardcover from the library several times and only recently discovered it had been released in paperback -- which interested me for not only price but also weight, as the hardcover is large and very heavy. But I was concerned to see the paperback described as "abridged," and so when I received it I compared it side-by-side with the hardcover edition to see whether it suited me.

It's great! I would not characterize it as abridged, it's exactly the same as the hardcover except its size (8 1/2 x 10 1/2-in instead of 10 1/4 x 12 3/4-in) and that it contains a handful fewer pages/photographs (literally a couple dozen, mostly associated with the hardcover's big fold-out pages that the paperback doesn't have). Otherwise, the layout is the same (shrunk proportionally to fit the slightly smaller page) and the quality of the paper and photographic reproduction is equivalent. The paperback edition also adds a Reading Group Guide of questions.

I highly recommended THE OXFORD PROJECT, and highly recommended it in paperback.

A Project in Life ... in many ways, perhaps even our own ...
By Vanilla Bean
It is amazing that in 1984 all of the residents (except 6) of this small town were photographed and that now they have been re-photographed in the same way PLUS have been interviewed with an inviting, open-ended, "Tell me about your life ..."

The history. The changes. The values. The life. The love. The loss. The realism. The dreams. The regrets. The celebrations. Wow.

In our culture, we tend to live too much for today and this book is a subtle way to contemplate our own lives from a bigger-picture perspective, with a much broader and more meaningful stroke than the immediate.

Moments and decisions -- the cornerstones of our lives. They are ours to experience as well as ours to make. I've enjoyed the transparent view into Oxford and how it allows us to take a similar view into our own lives ... 20 years from now, how will we answer such a question? :)

This book is a very nicely bound coffee-table-quality book, the cover art actually 'changes' from the young boy to the current day man as you tilt it, the paper quality is superb, and the images are art-worthy. It's an all around great addition.

Bon Appetit!

Now everyone hangs out around my coffee table....
By sb-lynn
This book has already been summarized - it's the project of photographer Peter Feldstein, who in 1984, took photos of almost all of the residents of the small town of Oxford, Iowa. 20 years later he returned, and we see these same people, and hear from them about their lives, then and now.

This is a profoundly moving book, because both though the pictures, and the brief stories, we get a really sense of the nature of time and aging, and how our lives don't always proceed as planned. It's about human resilience, and about dashed dreams, and about just getting by. It takes your breath away to see how much changes, and even more so, how much it doesn't.

This is the most popular book on my coffee table (and it has a striking cover), and it's sure to get comments when anyone comes and visits.

Recommended. Especially for those of us who are older and can remember how we were in 1984, and how we see ourselves, today.

When God Was a Black Woman (And Why She Isn t Now), by Joseph R. Gibson

A few years ago I read a book by Merlin Stone called When God Was a Woman, in which she wrote that in the beginning, people prayed to the Creatress of Life, the Mistress of Heaven. At the very dawn of religion, God was a woman...the female deity in the Near and Middle East was revered as Goddess much as people today think of God...the original status of the Goddess was as supreme deity...the Great Goddess was regarded as immortal, changeless, omnipotent; and the concept of fatherhood had not yet been introduced into religious thought. As a critical thinker, I know that sometimes a lie is told when the truth is declared halfway or haphazardly. Stone, who happens to be a White female artist and college professor, never mentioned the racial make-up of the female divinities of the world s earliest civilizations she wrote about. I don t know understand how Stone could write a book about When God Was a Woman and then later write a book on Three Thousand Years of Racism, which focuses on uncovering evidence of racism imposed by Indo-Europeans after they conquered most of the same regions discussed in When God Was a Woman, and fail to connect the probability that the Goddesses she first wrote about were originally depicted as Black women. How can she admit that historical, mythological and archaeological evidence suggests that it was these northern people who brought with them the concepts of light as good and dark as evil (very possibly the symbolism of their racial attitudes toward the darker people of the southern areas) and of a supreme male deity; but not admit that the Goddess of theses Black people was also Black before they and She were conquered by White people (i.e., Indo-Europeans). Whether this failing was accidental or intentional is irrelevant, yet one could assume that the Goddesses would originally resemble the people who worship them. According to Albert Churchward, the earliest members of the human race appeared in the interior of the African continent about two million years ago, then from the region of the Great Lakes they spread over the entire continent. Groups of these early men wandered down the Nile Valley, settled in Egypt, and then later dispersed themselves to all parts of the world...As these early Africans wandered over the world, they differentiated into the various human subspecies that now inhabit our planet. The men who remained in the tropical and equatorial regions retained their dark complexions, whereas those that settled in the temperate zones lost a portion of their dusky pigmentation and developed a fairer skin. Provided that the original racial profile of the Nile, Indus, and Tigris-Euphrates River Valley as well as the Aegean civilizations has been clandestinely confirmed as Black/African, then the female divinities worshipped in these civilizations should also logically be Black/African. Accordingly, in the beginning, to revise Stone, God was a Black woman.

Good information but highly repetitive
By Heather Sinclair
This book has a lot of good information from a lot of great sources, many known scholars. The author does not do much in the way of offering his own opinion or perspective, though, it is mostly a copy of other scholars organized for the reader to put together. So I give this three stars for the quality of the information, I would have given the book more stars but the author is HIGHLY repetitive. He repeats over and over and over the same information and the same quotes and also due to lack of editing, there are sentences and whole paragraphs that are repeated one right after the other. I was not at all impressed with the editing or the senseless repetition. Without all of that, the book would have been half the size leading me to wonder whether the author purposely repeated large quantities of information just to make the book longer. Either way, the information makes the price worth it, but be prepared to either re-read information or skip over it for the 3rd or 4th time.

Very In-Depth & Replete w/well documented references
By Tabia™
I found Professor Gibson's "tree-free ebook" very in-depth and replete with well-documented references from many educators, and scholars that I know as well as a few that bought "new" enlightenment. I appreciate his scholarship and the re-telling of a her story that must never be forgotten nor relegated to the abyss of amnesia-tic forgetfulness. In addition, I was also impressed with the fact that a male could affably spin this truth w/o bias, prejudice or hidden agenda. Therefore, I highly recommend this ebook to all truth seekers, like myself.

The Truth Starts Here
By Ian Montgomerie
Let me begin this review with the recommendation: this book is the ultimate resource for a clear, non-polemic analysis of the welfare state. If you really want to learn about the ins and outs of welfare and privatization - and I mean _really_ learn - this is the book you want. You could read any five other books about welfare economics, income inequity, and social policy without getting as thorough an examination as this book contains. If you want to learn about the ins and outs of privatization and the welfare state, what works and what doesn't (and why), look no further. I have never read, nor even heard of, a more thorough treatment - which is remarkable considering that this book is accessible to any intelligent reader with a bit of patience.
"The Economics of the Welfare State" is commonly used as a textbook for upper year undergraduate and introductory graduate courses in economics. This does not, however, mean that you actually need to have such an economic background to understand it. This 415 page text starts from the beginning, covering all of the economic theory and politucal background you need to understand the contents. In my opinion, it would help to have taken a course in introductory microeconomics before reading this book. That isn't strictly necessary, though, I just think it's helpful in order to understand such serious economic ideas without too much head-scratching. In fact, the book has simplified summaries of the theory chapters for "non-technical" readers, and suggestions of what you should read, depending on your interests, if you don't want to read the whole thing.
The author warns that you may have to take some stuff on faith if you skip the theory, but trust me, you can because it's rock solid.
Oh yes, and while this may be a book on economics, you won't find very many equations in it. And every single one of them can safely be skipped without really hurting the general reader's understanding of the book. This isn't an abstract work, either - Britain is used as the major case study, with many comparisons to other countries such as the US. Specific institutions and policies are described and evaluated, with direct application to real-world political debates. Every bit of theory in the book is directly applied to relevant, detailed examples. The author intends to educate, rather than to pursuade, so the issues are considered in light of multiple ideological perspectives. After describing the major views on the welfare state, all the way from libertarianism through to socialism, Barr points out the relevance of his major points to the perspectives of these various groups.
This is a good book for people interested in evaluating just about any political orientation. It uses clear, well-justified arguments to demonstrate that market failure in many important areas is unambiguous, and that government intervention may not only be superior in principle, but often is superior in the real world. It considers these issues from different perspectives, making it clear that concerns for economic efficiency and social equity may lead to different conclusions.
The author makes no bones about shooting down all unsubstantiated arguments, not just conservative ones. He clearly demolishes a lot of liberal and socialist arguments that some services should be provided by government - if the market really is more efficient at producing something that one wants to guarantee, the government should usually pay for it, not produce it. He considers many situations, such as housing, where the historical use of subsidy and regulation rather than outright income transfers appears to be economically inefficient and inequitable. Barr also explains how some policies designed to decrease inequality can actually increase it. He describes the university system in the UK as regressive, that is, promoting inequality. While it is paid for by all and free to all, in practice the rich are much more likely to actually attend university. Those wishing to promote social equality would do best to read these arguments, so that they can avoid supporting measures destined to backfire. He even demonstrates that some major political arguments have been over trivialities. He explains how the differences between "pay as you go" social insurance schemes and those funded by one's own previous contributions are actually not all that great, contrary to much of the debate about Social Security in the US.

Biased but useful
By hansom@online.no
This is a useful book since it is clear, systematic and rigorous. It is biased because it leaves out certain arguments and are more critical of opposing arguments than arguments in favour of the welfare state. For instance, very few pages are devoted to discussing government failure and the information problems facing the government

A beautiful, heart-wrenching novel from the New York Times best-selling author of Tatiana and Gorky Park, set against the dangers of Italy in World War II as a young couple must outrun the Nazis to protect their forbidden love.

Venice, 1944. The war may be waning, but the city is still occupied and people all over Europe fear the power of the Third Reich. One night, under a sky of brilliant stars, a poor fisherman named Cenzo comes across a girl's body floating in the lagoon. He carries her into his boat and soon discovers that she is very much alive and very much in trouble: Born to a wealthy Jewish family who has been captured and deported by the Nazis, Guilia is on the run after she was found hiding in a local hospital. Cenzo decides it's the right thing to do to help her escape, never anticipating an innocent act of chivalry would quickly turn to love as the two grow closer.

Set against the beauty, mystery, and danger of World War II, The Girl from Venice is a sweeping and romantic love story from one of our most celebrated contemporary suspense writers.

Smart & beautiful writing, terrific story, well-drawn characters, believable - a winner!
By DHY
Terrific read and a wonderful sense of Venice and Italy at the end of the war. The fisherman/fish were a smartly-used metaphor/parallel story throughout, for example, early on, we learn that you can't get squid/octopus because you can't see them unless they blink, and that comes back into the story later in a masterful way. Every detail in the first third of the book is addressed in the rest of the book. There's nothing superfluous. He chooses every word for a reason, and there's a payoff on everything he introduces. Besides being a great story, I'm rooting for the Guilia and Cenzo, and not disappointed in the end - but it wasn't schmultz. I just can't say enough about this man's writing. It's smart. Really smart. I recommend this book highly. It's the kind of book (along with his Renko novels) that I will get out and reread, just for the joy of reading the writing. Well done!

The Arkady Renko novels are far more engaging
By Mal Warwick
Martin Cruz Smith is best known for the eight novels featuring Moscow police investigator Arkady Renko. I’ve read and admired them all. However, before creating the character of Arkady Renko in 1981, Cruz had written 17 previous works of fiction, all of them mysteries and nearly all under pseudonyms. His latest book, The Girl From Venice, appears to be a more serious undertaking. It’s a standalone novel set in Venice in the closing weeks of World War II. Though sometimes described as a thriller, it’s billed as a love story. I found it disappointing.

A fisherman who’s more than a fisherman

When we first meet Vincenzo (“Cenzo”) Vianello, we’re led to believe that he’s a simple fisherman who lives in a village just outside Venice. He’s nothing of the sort, however. He’s a painter whose work is admired locally, and his older brother, Giorgio, is a war hero and one of Italy’s most famous film stars. Cenzo so closely resembles Giorgio that he’s able to pass for him.

The SS and the extermination of Jews in Venice

The Girl From Venice is Giulia Silber. As the novel opens, Cenzo discovers her floating in a lagoon. She looks dead but is simply faking it. When a German patrol boat stops Cenzo’s boat for an inspection, she somehow manages to hide undetected. But a drunk SS officer goes on a rampage on the boat, inadvertently threatening her life. Cenzo kills him to save her. It turns out that Giulia is Jewish. She was the only one to escape from the mental hospital where she, her family, and other wealthy Venice Jews had been hiding out for several years. Even though Germany has clearly lost the war, and the end is no more than a few weeks away, the SS has mounted a search to find and kill Giulia.

Nazi generals, movie stars, and a “Swiss” film director

In the unfolding action, we meet Nazi generals who want to sue for peace, a “Swiss” film director, Giorgio and one of the actresses he’s sleeping with, the Argentine consul and his wife, and a bartender in Cenzo’s village who is connected to the partisans. At the center of the story is Cenzo’s courageous effort to move Giulia out of harm’s way toward the American lines. Naturally, along the way, the two fall in love despite the disparity in their ages: she’s 18, he’s 28.

Others have written better novels along these lines

Other American authors have covered similar territory and written better stories along these lines. Philip Kerr, Alan Furst, and Joseph Kanon, in particular, have all dug deeply into the reality of Europe under the Nazis and produced thrillers that are engrossing, grounded in historical fact, suspenseful, and entertaining. The Girl From Venice comes up short on this yardstick.

4 and 3/4 stars. If you've never read Martin Cruz Smith before you're in for a treat....many treats
By Kenneth C. Mahieu
I am a big fan of Martin Cruz Smith. I have read all eight books of the Arkady Renko series, and I have also read his excellent stand-alone "December 6". Yet it was the plot description of "The Girl From Venice" (GV) that attracted me most to the book - Venice, WWll, a mysterious girl floating in the lagoons. It was a very enjoyable read with a good balance of romance, drama, humor, and history. The war is quickly coming to an end, perhaps the most perilous time of all. Early one pre-dawn morning, protagonist Cenzo, a 28 year old not-so-simple fisherman and widower, catches his biggest fish of all time. Her name is Giulia, and it's not clear how old she is, perhaps 15, maybe 18 as she claims. Apparently she is the sole survivor of several Jews slaughtered in a raid at the hospital in which they were hiding.

Cenzo, the self-described supporter of his family including his mother and widowed sister-in-law is anxious to release his catch before she is caught with him by one of the many hostiles that are pursuing her, from local officials to multiple partisan gangs, to the German Army. And then there's Giorgio, the older brother, famous movie actor, a cad who seduced Gina, Cenzo's late wife.....and Hugo's wife too. Hugo's the other brother; he's dead too. Mom Sofia isn't too crazy about Giulia - after all she's Jewish, and the town custom is that Cenzo is supposed to marry his dead brother's widow! Before long, it becomes a case of "where's Guilia?" "where's the gold?" so much more complicated than Cenzo's usual worry, "where're the fish?".

There are many other interesting characters and there's a fair amount of running around, but this never becomes slapstick. Rather, there are many somber notes too, just to remind us this isn't a Frank Capra romance. When Giulia chops most of her hair off to disguise herself as an apprentice fisherman, Cenzo is reminded of the punishment meted out to the townswomen who had become too friendly with occupying troops.

Even so, there are occasional one-liners from Cenzo and friends very reminiscent of the wit, wisdom and wry humor of Renko. Two examples, "How's the smuggling going, Nido?" Giorgio asked. "Without fuel for my motorboat, I've become a very honest man." There is lot of bombing toward the end, and the US is not universally viewed as a savior. Giorgio is quizzed by a supposed German film director: "You just came in from.....?" asked Otto Klein. "Venice," Giorgio said. "And....." Otto hesitated. "It's still there."

A good story, interesting, well written. Moves along nicely. No bad words, sex is implied and then the scene fades to black. Recommended. If you've never read MCS before, be sure to read "Gorky Park".

The Plantagenet Roll of the Blood Royal: The Mortimer-Percy Volume, by The Marquis of Ruvigny and Ranieval

The present volume treats the descendants of Lady Elizabeth Mortimer, wife first of Henry, Lord Percy, K.G., called "Hotspur," and secondly, of Thomas, Lord Camoys, K.G. The plan followed is identical with that adopted in the Clarence and Exeter volumes. The lines from Lady Elizabeth are traced out in a series of tables until about the beginning of the nineteenth century; then in the body of the book the descendants of the various persons last named in the tables are set out in the order of primogeniture. The full dates of birth, marriage, and death are given, and in the cases of married persons the names of the husband and wife. Lady Elizabeth Mortimer was the elder daughter of Edmund (Mortimer), 3rd Earl of March, by his wife the Lady Philippa, only child and heir of Lionel (of Antwerp), Duke of Clarence, the eldest of the four sons of King Edward III of whom issue now survives. With this part is included a supplement containing some further descendants of the Duchess of Exeter and the Countess of Essex, which the compiler has since succeeded in tracing. The supplement and text each contain separate indices. This is a must for anyone researching royal bloodlines!

Computer Crimes and Digital Investigations, by Ian Walden

Computer and network-based crime is a rapidly growing phenomenon and problem for individuals, organizations and society as a whole -- whether in the form of viruses or the distribution of child pornography. There is a broad governmental recognition of the vulnerability of society to attacks against critical infrastructure, which includes computer and communications systems. As a consequence, governments have placed computer crime laws high on the political agenda.

This text provides a comprehensive legal analysis of the substantive and procedural rules relating to computer crime, and offers a clear explanation of the relevant technical aspects of computer crime -- from types of attacks launched through to forensic techniques. The text places computer crime firmly in its international context, through comparative discussion of laws in other jurisdictions, international harmonization initiatives, and mechanisms for co-operation between law enforcement bodies in different jurisdictions.

Review
An invaluable companion, not least because it largely delivers what it says on the cover David S Wall, King's Law Journal

‘A BOOK OF REFERENCE ON CRIME WITH A CYBERSPACE FILTER’ –- NOW IN A NEW EDITION
By Phillip Taylor MBE
‘A BOOK OF REFERENCE ON CRIME WITH A CYBERSPACE FILTER’ –- NOW IN A NEW EDITION

An appreciation by Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richmond Green Chambers

There appear to be certain lofty members of our profession including (rather astoundingly) a few members of the judiciary who still think cyberspace is something of a space oddity. They should only read this book.

Aimed specifically at the criminal law fraternity, Ian Walden’s ‘Digital Crimes and Digital Investigations’ will nonetheless be of interest to all lawyers who inevitably will have to deal with ‘high tech’ crime issues. In providing an overview of this indubitably vexed subject, this book, now in a new second edition, makes an important contribution to the still relatively scarce body of literature concerning this specialised area of law.

The first edition was published – would you believe – nine years ago. And in case there are still a number of practitioners and judges out there who need reminding, the Internet was long past its infancy even then, having been in widespread use at the time for at least ten years. Recently published by the Oxford University Press, the book provides an important update which will certainly be welcomed by criminal practitioners.

As the title indicates, the focus is on computer crime, more commonly referred to as ‘cyber-crime’ – a phenomenon facilitated by the ever-developing technologies of computer connectivity – i.e. the Internet. Now ubiquitous and almost instantly available, the Internet in the author’s words, has become ‘a key resource of the global economy.’ Largely unregulated (except in totalitarian states) the Internet has also become a key resource for assorted criminals and terrorists.

Author Ian Walden, who hails from Baker McKenzie and teaches an LLM course entitled ‘International Cybercrimes and Investigations’, mentions that the clients with whom he has had dealings, have exposed him to issues and insights that are not normally available to academics. He has also been a board member of a number of institutions concerned with Internet scrutiny, particularly on Internet safety.

The book, he says, may be viewed simply as a criminal law text’ ‘operating as a filter through which we can examine the whys and wherefores of criminal law and policy.’ It can be regarded as a computer crime book, or ‘a book on crime with a cyberspace filter’ -- in short, a book which focuses specifically on crime, as opposed to other aspects of internet usage such as contracts, trademarks, domain names and the like, not to mention ordinary communications.

As the author also remarks, it is obvious that computers ‘may play a part in the commission of nearly every form of criminal activity, from fraud to murder.’ The subject area is so wide that large chunks of it go beyond the scope of this book. The author therefore turns our attention to problems where computers and networks are involved, ‘either,’ he says, because ‘the legislation was drafted in an era before such technology was envisaged, or because statutory drafting has failed to be robust enough to appropriately address the use of information computer technologies (ICT).’ And there, fellow lawyers, lies the crux of the problem.

This is indeed a massive subject and those who crave further information on it will find research references aplenty in this book, including tables of cases, legislation and international treaties and conventions. Also note the four appendices, extensive footnoting and the ten-page bibliography.

Based on recent developments in digital and the current pace of change, it is anticipated that further editions of this distinguished and accessible work of reference will appear in the future, ideally at more frequent intervals.

The publication date is cited as at 2016.
