(Gay / Erotica / Erotic Romance / Fantasy / Pirates / Series) As prince and heir to the Samari throne, Luke puts nothing before his duty. While sailing to wed a foreign princess he's never met to secure a desirable alliance, his ship is beset by pirates and Luke is taken captive. The pirates and their charismatic captain, Conall, throw Luke's carefully ordered life--and his emotions--into turmoil. Conall is charming and seductive, and Luke's iron will softens in the heat of his kisses. Getting back to Samar ought to be a straightforward matter, but there's trouble brewing in Luke's absence and not everyone in his court would be pleased to see him make it home safely. Luke must decide whether to put duty before love, or relinquish his throne, forsake crown and country, for the lawless pirate who's stolen his heart. Or can he somehow find a way to cling to both?

For his entire life, Luke has done nothing but what was expected of him as prince and heir to the Samari throne. Now, sailing to a distant land to form an alliance by wedding a princess he has never met, Luke's life takes an unexpected turn. He's captured by pirates and is being held for ransom. More disconcerting than his capture, however, is the pirate captain himself, Conall. Conall's charming, seductive, and throws Luke completely off balance. Luke knows he cannot give into his desire for the dashing pirate; he's the Samari prince and must always put the needs of his people before his own desires. But after succumbing to the temptation Conall presents, will Luke be able to turn his back on love?

A roguish pirate, a handsome prince, and high-stakes lust on the high seas all combine into one rollicking good time in A King's Ransom. Aislinn Kerry makes it impossible not to fall for her two sensual heroes; both men have honor, courage, and wicked sex appeal. Though Conall and Luke's very different upbringings give them somewhat clashing views on life, it's clear the two are made for each other. I loved watching the push and pull between them as Luke wrestled with his dilemma. I adored A King's Ransom, though if I could ask for one thing it would be a fuller ending. I was somewhat disconcerted when I reached the last page and found that it was, indeed, the end of the book, for I was left with some questions about what Conall and Luke would face. Still, I greatly enjoyed A King's Ransom and can't wait to see what Ms. Kerry comes up with next!

A King's Ransom is a fantasy tale both for allowing the author to play with a gay romance in an historical setting and also to have some escamotage in the story that would have been not possible in real life.

Luke is the princeling of a fantasy kingdom and he is sailing to a near kingdom to meet his soon-to-be bride; it's not a love marriage but more a political agreement: Luke's father is hill and he wants the son married and with an heir on the come before living his mortal life. Luke is young and very responsible, the classical good son that would never disappoint his father; and of course he will not arrive to the end of his travel.

Conall is a pirate and a gentleman, well he is a gentleman since he is not interested in damsel in distress, and Luke is disguised as a lady when they meet. At first Conall is more than intentioned to give back the young lady unscathed in exchange of a good sum of money, but when he discovers that Luke is a boy and not a girl, and above all an innocent boy, the temptation is too great; after all he can debauch a young boy without much consequences, something he would have been not able to do with a lady.

At first Luke is all against surrendering to temptation, not much since he is against the idea to be with a man, but more since he doesn't know what to expect. Luke has never been with a woman, much less with a man, and he is not used to satisfy his body desires. As soon as Conall awakes him to the pleasure of the flesh, Luke seems almost to forget that there is kingdom waiting for him and a supposed fiance. Actually the soon-to-be bride disappears from the story and the only complaint Luke has on Conall is that the man is a pirate and of an enemy country; the fact that he is a man seems not really important. Luke seems more worried to be accused of indecency, than sodomy.

That is probably the point of the book where the reader start to realize that this is a fantasy and not an historical romance: there is no much fuss over the homosexuality of Conall, it's more important that he is not of the same social status of Luke than the "little" detail that he is a man. But aside from that, in any case this is more a romance than an historical fiction: Conall and Luke seem to spend all their time in Conall's cabin, there is no really evidence of any other people outside them if not for two episodes when Conall's men, rightly I would say, make their presence clear; the pirate's life seems a little too fascinating, and of course the captain, Conall, is both a pirate than a gentleman, otherwise he would not be a good match for an heir to a throne.

A King's Ransom is more a romantic tale than a historical fiction, and people should read it like that; enjoy Conall's carelessly behaviour and Luke's descend from his pedestal; Conall is in all respects the ravishing pirate of Romance with the capital letter R.

I enjoyed it more than I expected to.

POSSIBLE SPOILERS IN THE REVIEW

Handsome pirate takes a ship which carries the prince of rival (fictitious) country to meet and a marry his betrothed. Prince is being held for ransom, finds captain irresistible, does not admit that he finds captain irresistible right away, then eventually admits that fact and eventually they get their happy ending. It is pretty much standard light variety of master/slave or captor/prisoner trope. However several things made it more enjoyable for me than it would have been. Not much is happening outside of the ship, but both guys are incredibly stubborn and quite well drawn, thus while they clash, it is entertaining to read. Luc is no damsel in distress needed to be saved, he is energetic and passionate about his future duties and is quite determined to do what he thinks his country needs him to. And Captain, well, he is quite determined to make Luc see that duty could be carried in a way that would make both of them happy.

NOTE, if you are looking for more hardcore variety of this trope, look elsewhere. There is no torture, or rape here, not even forced seduction (IMO anyway) between the guys. Luc may not succumb to the desire right away, but he is NOT being forced. Seduced, sure, but not by force and right from the beginning Luc knows he is attracted to the Captain.

And at the end they are totally equal partners in the relationship, which I loved as well.

Oh sex was plentiful (way overboard for me).
