A must for fashion fanatics

From the front of this beautiful book you know that you are in for a treat. Dorling Kindersley have yet again produced a beautifully illustrated book take us through the history of fashion. The book has a lovely textural feel to its cover with the dress on the front being raised (with a velvet texture to it).
Inside you get a succinct history of costume/fashion starting from prehistory and continuing to the present. Each 'chapter' deals with a period of history eg The Ancient World which runs from prehistory to 600 CE, the next chapter dealing with Medieval Romance and Trade 600 CE - 1449, etc. The opening of each chapter gives you a visual timeline showing the key changes in fashion for each period. The chapters are then broken down into 2 pages dealing with key areas of changes in fashion and the reasons behind the changes, such as Courtly love and the Crusades. The accompanying text is easy to read and digest and makes this a great book to pick off the shelf, open it at a page and just enjoy.
There are plenty of fabulous illustrations showing in detail the designs and styles within a certain historical period and you also get more in depth illustrations for particularly iconic pieces.
Dotted through this sumptuous book there are condensed biographies of some the the most influential people who altered the course of fashion, so you have get a short biography on Eleanor of Aquitaine and her influence upon fashion with the medieval period, later in the book you will find the same space given over to Chanel, Alexander McQueen and Vivienne Westwood. At the back there is a quick over view of the history of womenswear, menswear, hat, purses, etc. and then you finally get a good glossary explaining any technical language in relation to fashion and its' design.
This would be a great addition for any bookshelf. Anyone who loves fashion will enjoy this book and actually you don't have to be a great fashionista to appreciate it. As a treat for yourself this is a wonderful book and as a gift for family and friends again you can't go wrong. I could see anyone from the age of 10/12 up to adult getting lots of pleasure from this gorgeous book.

Sumptuous reference volume.

This is a beautifully presented book, a real visual treat and as near comprehensive a volume on its subject than any other I`ve seen.
The history of fashion, told page by page using figures isolated from paintings, fashion plates, photographs, museum exhibits of dress and accessories, etc., all supported with timelines, contemporary documentation, brief entries on fashion icons and key designers from all periods, with a very useful glossary section at the back.
It's quite simply the most useful and complete reference work offering a wonderful historical overview, a delight to look through. It`s a large format book - 31 x 26.4 x 3.8 cm, with 480 pages packed with images and information. There are a few omissions; I don`t doubt some will notice the odd missing trend, celebrity influence or development, but given the breadth of the field, this is nothing short of an utterly heroic effort to cover it all.
Its only flaw is the cover and spine; that wonderfully tactile flocked fabric surface will not withstand the constant use it will undoubtedly be subject to if its kept in a bookshelf, as it is very likely that this volume will find it's way into many a designer's workplace/studio; either keep this on your coffee table or on a shelf of its own at home.
This is an eminently recommendable book for both its contents and price range, a clear five star item.
TIP: if the white cover starts to look grubby, roll or dab a clean piece of blue-tack over the affected area; unless it's a stain, it should clean up quite well.
