However, declining costs and expanding audiences brought a steady erosion in the intellectual content of magazines, illustrated by the rise in sex and celebrity titles during the 1970s and later. The book concludes with an assessment of the decade since 2000, and offers an optimistic outlook for the future of magazines.

Outstanding Media History

There are not many books which really thoroughly cover the history of an industry.
The magazine industry is one of the most interesting in the US, and the twentieth century may have represented the industry's best days, although innovation and specialization continues. Sumner's book covers both the big time leaders like Henry Luce but also the innovators and smaller publishers, and it covers the waterfront, complete with lots of data so you can do your own analysis. I wish there were more books like this, on other industries.
