About the Author
Ricard Bru (Ph.D. in Art History) has been a professor of Nineteenth-Century Art History at the University of Barcelona and he is currently working for the Institute of Culture of Barcelona. He curated the resent exhibitions "Secret Images: Picasso and the Japanese Erotic Print" (2009), and "Japonisme: The Fascination of Japanese Art" ("Japonismo: La fascinacion por el arte japones") (2013)."

A tremendously scholarly, informative, and lavishly illustrated book, EROTIC JAPONISME is a follow-up (and in part expansion upon) to Bru's outstanding essay in Secret Images: Picasso and the Japanese Erotic Print, tracing the heretofore little-known influence of Japanese erotic art on the West. While most works of this sort might focus on a few popular ukiyo-e artists or fill page after page with graphic shunga, Bru delves into the history of interaction between Japan and the West, investigating the process of discovery, the dealers, and the sources of information that westerners would have had access to, and from there traces the rising development of the "Japonisme" style and "Japonist" artists. A must-have for any student of the style or period.
One particular section that follows and expands on Bru's essay in SECRET IMAGES traces the influence of Hokusai's "Diver and Octopuses" and similar works, noting the timely coincidence of the arrival of the prints as Victor Hugo's novel TOILERS OF THE SEA was published, and the compounded imagery formed an influence on artists such as Picasso, Rodin, and Felicien Rops, among many others.
