Substituting a 12AY7 for a 12AX7 for taming preamp distortion
Pickup height and how it affects tone
Pickup strength--hot vs. medium gain and the benefits of each
Great advice on speakers and cabinets.
Great advice on amp power levels and power control.
Recordings of different guitar cables--is it worth the extra $$$ for those quality cables?
Speaker patch cables, sound differences between series and parallel speaker wirings.
I no doubt will save money by not buying gear/parts that don't live up to what I expected: NOS tubes, high-end cables, etc.

Chock full of unactionable information

I really can't complain about the author's thoroughness and comprehensiveness. If you want to learn a lot about the various elements in the electric guitar signal chain, you can probably find it in here. I've played electric guitar for over 40 years and found myself all too often yawning my way through the various chapters. The problem is that even after reading all this stuff, and gaining a better understanding of all the various options (amp types, pedals, guitars, etc.) I found little that I could actually act on, by which I mean, actual suggestions I could apply to finding the tones swirling around in my head. It's like being shown, in detail, all the individual pieces in a puzzle but without any good suggestions for how they can be assembled to create your own picture. So I never 'discovered' my ultimate sound, or what to do to get nearer to it, which is what I hoped to do by buying the book in the first place. Had the author walked me through the elements of a specific tone from a known guitarist, front to back, and how his specific elements contributed to that sound, well that would have served my purpose better, especially if the author contrasted similar set-ups and highlighted why they wound up sounding distinct. So I give it three stars for content but I felt it missed the mark.

A Must-Have For Tone Seekers Everywhere!

This book is something I've been searching for for a long time! A great read (VERY dense with great information) for anyone seeking to learn more about and improve their electric guitar tone. The only gripe I would have with it is that the language could come off as really pretentious, or assuming everyone knows all of the technical jargon...but most of these terms are indexed in the glossary :-)
