About the Author
Greg Herren is a New Orleans-based author and editor. Former editor of Lambda Book Report, he is also a co-founder of the Saints and Sinners Literary Festival, which takes place in New Orleans every May. He is the author of ten novels, including the Lambda Literary Award winning Murder in the Rue Chartres, called by the New Orleans Times-Picayune “the most honest depiction of life in post-Katrina New Orleans published thus far.” He co-edited Love, Bourbon Street: Reflections on New Orleans, which also won the Lambda Literary Award. He has published over fifty short stories in markets as varied as Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine to the critically acclaimed anthology New Orleans Noir to various websites, literary magazines, and anthologies.

Note to Author

Enjoyed the book. Would recommend. My only fault with the book (and this is for the author),
is that the ending, while good, did not have an impact with what was going on at Marc's house.
I thought Scotty's actions, that helped to stop the violent arc of "history repeating itself," did not
directly influence the "violent" events at Marc's house (his phone call to Marc made no
difference). There should have been a link. If this were a movie, I would suggest on the next
release (version for a book) that they have an alternate ending or rewrite (same results), but
more in keeping with the supernatural undertones of the link between Scotty and Mark.
Would like to see a sequel, along the lines of "the further adventures of..."

Poor execution

I struggled a lot with reading this book. It was too boring and uninteresting and had it been 300 pages long, I probably would have put it down around 20% in.
Every aspect of Lake Thirteen was just so flat and dry. The characters were my main issue; Teresa, Rachel, Logan and Scott were so stereotypical that even their responses to the situations reinforced their particular stereotype. They were given no room for either development or improvement and their lack of character growth even in the face of dire situations made the book seem like a badly written Jonas Brothers fanfic.
With an ominous title, I wasn’t an idiot for expecting something scary or failing that, creepy. Lake Thirteen did include ghosts but what it didn’t include was the terrifying part of it. The hauntings were so cheesy and predictable that it felt ripped off from a scene in one of those Scary Movie parody films. I wasn’t scared – I was rolling on the floor in hysterics.
It’s commendable that the author chose to have a gay teenaged boy as the main character but there was nothing that highlighted the problems homosexuals face today. Sure, there was that part about Albert and him being murdered because he was gay, but what about Scott, the book’s actual protagonist? He frequently talked about how scared he was of being bullied and made fun of but there were no specifics, no experiences wherein he was being discriminated against due to his sexual orientation.
The blurb of this book promised a lot but promises are made to be broken and with poor execution, Lake Thirteen was just a mind numbing and cringe-worthy book.

Great YA mystery well-crafted by talented author!

Scotty is anticipating an uneasy week, on vacation with his parents, their friends and the friends' kids, at a remote mountain resort in upstate New York. He gets along fine with the other teens, but is apprehensive because it will be the first time he sees them after having "come out" as gay to them via e-mail, and he is unsure how supportive they will be. When Scotty came out at school, he could simply avoid those who had a problem with it, but that won't be possible to do when he's stuck in that group all week.
Besides, Scotty is worried about his boyfriend, Marc, who has a very strict, homophobic father. They had been extremely careful around him, and he even had to censor his text messages, in case the father saw Marc's phone.
When they get settled in at the resort, a new level of uneasiness arises, from the rumors of haunting that go on in the area, especially at an abandoned shack a short distance toward the lake. Scotty soon finds out that he seems to have a special connection to one of the ghosts, who bears a striking resemblance to Marc! The teens ask locals about theories about the haunting, and research news articles that might provide an answer to both the haunting and Scotty's seeming connection to it all.
Greg Herren is a master at gay fiction, with his young adult stories just as well written as his more popular mysteries. One of the best things about his YA efforts is that he challenges his readers, exposing them to situations and subplots which may not be comfortable or easily related, but which ultimately lead through captivating developments to the ultimate resolution of the story. While featuring teen characters, the book can be enjoyed by readers of any age. Five stars out of five.
