One critic does not like this book

One critic does not like this book. (Maybe others will follow) but for now the biases of a graduate student with little teaching experience defines this book. I hope to compensate for that. While it could be said legitimately that this book covers too wide a range of theories. the filling in of details is left to the instructor, as it should be. We can choose theories that best fit the focus of our department, our own personal preferences, and how we best like to illustrate the type of theory that is being categorized. I have used this book for 15 years and am happy with it. It do work with an earlier version (the "Classic" version) since the newer editions that focus on theories of communicators, messages, etc. makes the book overly complex without improving the coverage. Even with that reservation, to all this text the "worst book" on communication theory is unwarranted and unfair.

Avoid at all costs

This is hands-down the worst textbook I've ever used. I'm a grad student in communication and have now had to review comm theory textbooks to teach (i.e., TA) a comm theory course myself. When the prof I'll be teaching with asked me what book I used in my grad comm theory class, I told him this one. He said that's the worst book on comm theory ever. Indeed it is. You will retain nothing, because it is literally a grocery list of theories with practically zero development and even less illustration of how the theories actually get applied. They aimed solely for quantity here, not quality. Even the classification system for the theories, though it grows out of genuine disciplinary divisions, is pretty much useless for students. All it does is overcomplicate stuff.
On the other hand—and to be fair to the authors—this was the standard comm theory text for many, many years, because there was no other comm theory textbook. Frankly, as comm scholars we have had a really difficult time figuring out how to write a decent comm theory text. (There are good reasons for that.) But these days, there are WAY better ones than this, even though, in its time, this was the best there was (God help us). I do have one colleague who loves this book, but we have argued over it several times and he concedes that it is not good for learning, but only as a reference book. I would agree that it can be useful as a reference, if you're making some foray into an area of comm theory you've never explored, and need to get a sort of superficial feel for the theories that area applies. But for teaching/learning, this is an absolute no-go.
If your prof assigned you this text, I feel for you. I suggest you buy another comm theory text to supplement it, so you can actually make sense of some of the bajillion theories this one will throw at you. Try Katherine Miller's text or Em Griffin's. Those are actually approachable.
If you're a prof who assigns this text: Shame on you. Go order some desk copies you lazy sod. You are torturing your students! I know you're overworked, but just put your stupid research down for ONE DAY and review some other texts for your students' sake!
